idle mixture screw instructions

Post by kilrcalikawi » Thu Jun 13, 2002 10:14 am

Someone requested that I give them the step by step instructions I wrote for someone else, since i can't remember who it was I'll give them to everyone, feel free to pick em apart all you want :-) Trev 0.5 go for a long ride and run all of the gas out of your tank (if it's full it weighs like 40 pounds or something to that effect) 1. remove gas tank 2. remove throttle cables (it's only one screw that holds the bracket on the side of the carb) 3. remove allen bolt from bottom of choke lever, the whole lever and cable should come out (make sure you can figure out how it goes back together), leave the lever on the cable and just pull the cable down so there is enough slack at the carb to let you rotate it (you shouldn't have to cut any zip ties), be careful with the connection at the carb it looks like it can be broken easily (I tried to get it apart but I didn't want to break it so I didn't mess with it anymore) 4. loosen the two clamps 5. turn carb so bottom faces towards the left, the wiring harness might interfere a little with the carb turning so just keep an eye on everything, turn the carb slowly and don't force it, if it doesn't want to turn make sure your clamps are loose and then look for whatever the carb is hanging up on. 6. the idle mixture screw has a silver plug on in it, it's at the end of a little tube that sticks out from the bottom of the carb, it's pretty obvious, the plug is about 1/8 thick, so drill it out with small hole, you may want to put a piece of tape around your drill bit to mark the 1/8 inch, there is probably another 1/8 on the other side before you hit the screw with the drill bit. Once you have the hole drilled you should be able to stick something in the hole and pry the plug out. 7. take a small screwdriver, turn the screw all of the way in until it bottoms lightly, don't tighten it, then back it out about 2 1/4 turns. Put everything back together and go for a ride, you'll like it. disclamer: If you screw up it's not my fault (i'll just point and laugh :-)

Ricardo, I had a 95 (A9) and that was the last year in which a kickstart kit could be added. I never installed one, but thought about it when my battery was acting weak. Anyway, I believe that these kits may be becoming more and more rare. Someone else on the list may be able to direct you to where you may find one. (Fred?) (Jake?). Good luck, although I never had the pleasure of kicking over a KLR650, I admire anyone who wants that option to be part of his (her) motorcyle experience. I think I still have scar tissue left over from scrapes and bruises obtained as a youngster ( the rupp 80cc or the riverside 50cc) when I had to kick the hell out of them when flooded. You do not have to remove the gas tank. Just disconnect the vacuum and main supply lines at the petcock. Note: gas and hot engine parts do not mix very well! John --- kilrcalikawi wrote:

I had to take the tank off in order to get to one of the screws on the clamps, it also made the whole operation a lot easier. Trev

Or you can save the trouble altogether and get Jake's pilot screw adjustment tool: http://www.sagebrushmachine.com/pilottool.html Mark B2 A2 A3 At 4:52 PM +0000 6/13/02, kilrcalikawi wrote:

You still have to drill the plug out first, and unless you have a really really really small (like microscopic) drill I don't think it will fit under the carb. (yes I have rebuttal for everything today) Trev
