Are you sure you did not just turn off the gas? One horizontal position is "reserve", the other is "off". I forget which is which, but I think forward is reserve, back is off. The other possibility is that the reserve orifice in your petcock is blocked. In any case, the capacity of the stock tank is probably less than the advertised 6.2 gal., maybe as little as 5.5 gal.

Same thing happend to me a couple weeks ago. It turned out to be the fuel filter I installed over a year ago. If you have a filter, that may also be your problem. With a full tank f gas, there is enough pressure to force the gas through the filter. Craig Kahler

~~~Jud, FWIW, I had the fuel tank off my 08' recently (valve check), completely emptied it, measured out a gallon to re-fill and road straight to a filling staiton less than a mile from me and topped it off. The new style fuel tank (08'-2010) carries 6 gallons exactly I think the OP's next move is to remove the fuel tank, drain it (not necessarily in that order) and remove the petcock for examination. That's what I'd do if I was having the issues he's having. But, others may have better and different ideas Jake Reddick Fla. My 08 seems to play out as folows. Factory 6.2 Galon tank 5 galons of useful fuel in "on" .7 galons of reserver when the lever if swung t the front (lever forward to keep going forward!) .5 galons of fuel intended for use as balast There is a mod for the tap that is worth looking into. More over I dont think they all tap the same from stuff I have heard. I think the best solution is to pull the tank and block it up in the "as riden" position. pour off the fuel in the on position then measure what comes out in Reserve. Next measure what is left by pulling the tap and sloshing the fuel out. With that you can decide if modification is required then look to see if the reserve port is plugged at the same time

Marat, How'd you like to be able to go OVER 100 miles on reserve? It's fairly easy. Pull the gas tank (better if it's almost empty), lay it on the right side and remove the petcock. It has 2 'tubes' that were inside your tank: the short one is what gets selected on reserve so you can run it dry; the other, longer one, is the normal side, and the difference between them is the amount of gas left when you select reserve (which AIN'T much!). Cut the longer one in the middle and extend it higher (I added a piece of fuel line so the tube became extended either 1 1/2" or 2 1/2", can't remember), or you could solder a piece of tube in, but be careful! Then re-install your petcock, fill up and carry a gallon can of gas extra, and ride till you go onto reserve and "zero" your trip odometer, then ride until it's out of gas again, which is what the gallon of gas is for. Your odo will tell you how far your reserve will get you now. Now I have AT LEAST 100 miles on reserve, so I don't worry about being off the beaten path. Cheers, Ed

Marat, Any chance you were on "RESERVE" when you first ran out of gas? Nobody here has EVER done that. cough. spit. wink. laugh. Adding only 4.6 gallons it does not sound like you were in reserve.... If the answer is "NO"--read on. Do you have an in-line fuel filter? My KLR does not like fuel filters; works for many, does not work for mine. With a fuel filter installed, the bike bikes goes to reserve early, goes only 2-3 miles on reserve, then lay down the bike, gather a bit of gas from the right side over to the left side, and then go only 2-3 miles more. Repeat 2x. At the gas station, 4.9 gallons total after what seems like being nearly bone dry; unfortunately, like you I had about a gallon of trapped gas with the fuel filter. Why? There is a certain amount of head pressure (column of fuel)needed to push pas the fuel filter resistance. Now having said all that, many here use fuel filters without any difficulty. shrug. Jeff Saline and I bought the same type filter, same time, same shop, and less than 500 miles later, I am fuel starved with 1 gallon remaining. shrug, again. Fuel petcock might be another problem. The device might not have the right plumbing for it to work as advertised. What to do? "While doing this at home", carry some spare fuel-- Run the fuel down low, note the lever positions and see if the problem is repeatable. = deliberately run it out of fuel. Sure sounds like a petcock problem, petcock straw blockage, if not a fuel filter problem. Let us know what you find. revmaaatin.

Marat- I think you will want to duplicate the complaint a second time to absolutely verify the conditions--allowing you to passionately describe the frustration of a bike without a true reserve; otherwise, I suspect you will get it back with the response, "could not duplicate" the problem and you will be out of a motorcycle for two weeks and it will not work a bit better than it did when you took it in for warranty. revmaaatin.
