my KLR will be closer to Oil Change Time at 1800 hrs. today, March 16th, 2010. Right now it is at around 470+ miles; it's not even broken in. I got the bike in September. I usually have the dealer do the first service at 800 to 1000 miles, then I take it from there..... Just when should I change the oil? Since it sat the winter in the garage, run a few times and warmed up, I am thinking I should get to it soon. Thoughts?

~~~Great!!!!, the start of yet another oil thread=:-) thanks Chuck
Okay, not what you wanted to hear but, I did the 1st oil change on my KLR at 20 miles. Picked it up at the dealer new, the ride home is 20 miles...what I did was the moto man break in...run the motor RPM's as high as I could (motor wouldn't hit redline it was so tight new) in the lower gears, then immedetely chop the throtlle so the motor decell engine breaks, then rev her up again, repeat...did that for 20 miles, on slow speed secondary roads, got home, dumped the oil, filter (bought new filters at the dealer with the bike- I always keep oil in the garage...) this type of engine break in procedure helps to seat the rings to the cylinder walls. some might think it's controversial (not this crowd)...I think it makes perfect sense, and 10 K miles later, I don't have one of those oil burning 08' KLR's, but...I think the 08's that burn most of the oil, have or had out of round cylinder bores, some were documented with poor oil sealing rings and were fixed under warranty, but mine has never used appreciable amounts of oil. First real oil consumption I noticed I just did 800 miles on the slab at interstate speeds in two days and it used a little better than a pint of oil to top it off. Not bad IMO considering I spent a lot of time riding at 80 + MPH indicated. Was reading some 08' KLR oil sucker horror stories the other day where some used a quart of oil in as little as several hundred miles. Which reminds me, I need to get over to Wolfgangs so he and I can do the air box PCV mod to my bike=:-) See?, I told you this wasn't what you wanted to hear=:-)
If I were you I would change the oil now Chuck, and the oil filter. you know you want to do it=:-)
~~~I think I can help you with that...next time you see a NKLR thread, instead of looking at it and getting all riled up, put a piece of black electrician's tape over the subject header. You wont notice a thing=:-)

I need to commune with the thump of the engine, and while I hear that, talk to my G-d about my life. Because I enjoy my time alone with my Father. You don't have to believe. I DO. But, that is neither here nor there. I plan to listen to that quiet thump, feel that gentle vibration, and enjoy the day. It's almost like; NO, it IS like therapy.
