Like most of you (at least most of you in the northern part of the country); I'm suffering a bit from Cabin Fever.

With the recent unpleasantness (i.e. the NKLR "Health Care debate"), I need some fresh air.

So, with that said, after my daughter's dentist appointment at 1130 hrs. (which I only just heard about around 6 PM tonight), I plan to put at least 100-200 miles on my 2009 KLR.

I really need to put some more miles on that Africa dual platform seat I got from Fred.  And, I need to decide if I need/want to lower it more.....

But, mainly, I need to ride.  I need to put some non-distracting miles on my head, as well as the bike.  I need to commune with the thump of the engine, and while I hear that, talk to my G-d about my life.  Because I enjoy my time alone with my Father.  You don't have to believe.  I DO.  But, that is neither here nor there.  I plan to listen to that quiet thump, feel that gentle vibration, and enjoy the day.  It's almost like; NO, it IS like therapy.

It is supposed to be near 60 degrees here tomorrow.   I pray that this really happens.  But, even if it doesn't, my KLR will be closer to Oil Change Time at 1800 hrs. today, March 16th, 2010.  Right now it is at around 470+ miles; it's not even broken in.  I got the bike in September.  I usually have the dealer do the first service at 800 to 1000 miles, then I take it from there.....  Just when should I change the oil?  Since it sat the winter in the garage, run a few times and warmed up, I am thinking I should get to it soon.  Thoughts?

And, off that subject, and onto another - anyone use any kind of "speaker system" for their iPod, for listening when they ride?  Helmet or handlebar setup?  Because there are some times when I like to catch on my podcasts while I ride.....

Thoughts? > ~~~Great!!!!, the start of yet another oil thread=:-) thanks Chuck Okay, not what you wanted to hear but, I did the 1st oil change on my KLR at 20 miles. Picked it up at the dealer new, the ride home is 20 miles...what I did was the moto man break in...run the motor RPM's as high as I could (motor wouldn't hit redline it was so tight new) in the lower gears, then immedetely chop the throtlle so the motor decell engine breaks, then rev her up again, repeat...did that for 20 miles, on slow speed secondary roads, got home, dumped the oil, filter (bought new filters at the dealer with the bike- I always keep oil in the garage...) this type of engine break in procedure helps to seat the rings to the cylinder walls. some might think it's controversial (not this crowd)...I think it makes perfect sense, and 10 K miles later, I don't have one of those oil burning 08' KLR's, but...I think the 08's that burn most of the oil, have or had out of round cylinder bores, some were documented with poor oil sealing rings and were fixed under warranty, but mine has never used appreciable amounts of oil. First real oil consumption I noticed I just did 800 miles on the slab at interstate speeds in two days and it used a little better than a pint of oil to top it off. Not bad IMO considering I spent a lot of time riding at 80 + MPH indicated. Was reading some 08' KLR oil sucker horror stories the other day where some used a quart of oil in as little as several hundred miles. Which reminds me, I need to get over to Wolfgangs so he and I can do the air box PCV mod to my bike=:-) See?, I told you this wasn't what you wanted to hear=:-) If I were you I would change the oil now Chuck, and the oil filter. you know you want to do it=:-) > > With the recent unpleasantness (i.e. the NKLR "Health Care debate"), I need some fresh air. > ~~~I think I can help you with that...next time you see a NKLR thread, instead of looking at it and getting all riled up, put a piece of black electrician's tape over the subject header. I changed my new bike's oil at 100 miles and was amazed at the crap in the oil filter: Little flakes of metal, etc... I understand it's "normal" for a brand new engine. I then changed the oil again twice more before 2,000 miles and with each change the filter was cleaner and cleaner. Likewise, the oil was not as dirty-looking as the intervals grew. If you started up your bike over the winter, chances are the oil never got up to full operating temperature and any condensation was merely redestributed vs. eliminated. It's your bike. But, it's a relatively cheap (2.5l oil + a filter) investment to go ahead and change the oil. Besides, you'll have some fun doing it and take your mind off that dentist appointment. ;) eddie

I agree with what you wrote. I think I'll ride to the dealer for oil/ filter. :-) However, I didn't just start and warm the bike up. I guess I neglected to mention that I actually warmed the bike up by riding it up and down my street, after the engine was warm enough to run without the choke..... Chuck F. NE PA

    09 klr650 center stand

Post by Thomas Komjathy » Tue Mar 16, 2010 8:11 pm

I have the one that is non-adjustable, but it has the foot pad and bar to lever the bike up. I have also had the ones without the foot pad/bar and that one isn't near as easy. I will tell you this; if your bike is lowered and you get a fixed standard height center-stand, you will be putting in some effort to get it onto the stand. I haven't ried the adjustable one, but if it is durable, I would think adjustable is the way to go. Happy Trails has a one that is adjustable. KLR650.com also has a nice one. Which is better? Are they both easy to install? Any advise or suggestions would be of great help. Michael
