I've done it twice now without removing the hose, but I have no doubt that removing the hose helps. Did you lose a lot of coolant?

I was able to get .008" and .010" right on the money. It would be Very Nice if I don't need to replace any shims again for a very long time. It is not a fun job, like sharkfins and cupholders are. RM

Only an ounce or two of coolant was lost. I removed the fan and coil but after several tries, there wasn't enough clearance to remove the cam cover until I moved the upper rad hose out of the way. It might be the difference from one bike to another in how other nearby components such as the wiring harness fit that allow some to remove the cover without moving the rad hose. Seems as though a lot of us have purchased new KLR and are getting to that first 500 valve check. My question: Do you remove the cams or not? If you do, how do you get the cam chain tensioner loose?... or is that necessary on this beast. Thanks for all the great help folks Ride safe, West [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

No need to remove the cams....just the cam cap bolts so you can lift the cams up a tiny bit, enough to remove the shims (assuming you need to make a clearance adjustment). The cam chain tensioner is loosened by removing the washer, bolt, and spring on the left side of the barrel.

http://www.finishlinewest.com/klr_650_valve_adjustment.htm (Has a lot of pictures) http://www.dualsportnews.com/klr/klrvalve.html You'll probably also want the ShimCalc software: http://www.ironjungle.com/ And, last but not least, you'll want to have shims on hand. I would suggest you get the 16 shim "kit" from Fred and not have to worry about having the right one(s) when the bike is all apart and you want to just get the job done: www.arrowheadmotorsports.com

IMPORTANT Before you remove the bits that hold down the cam, make sure you stuff a rag into the cavity around the cam chain. Lots of unlucky folks have dropped bolts, etc. down the hole and it's a royal pain in the ass to get them out. Thanks CA Stu -----Original Message-----

Stupid question. The shim's from Fred have 275 stamped on them for example. What does the "275" mean. I know someone talked about this recently but I couldn't remember what was discussed. Thanks in advance, West [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

example. What does the "275" mean. It's not at all a stupid question, at least I didn't think so when *I* asked it! The shim "kit" that I got from Fred were marked 2-30, 2-35, etc., but I would guess the meaning is the same. The 2-30, for example, would be 2.30mm. I'm sure that your "275" means 2.75mm... Good luck! (I actually just came in from taking things apart for my 500 mile valve check to get the computer fired up to run ShimCalc. http://www.ironjungle.com/) Mark St.Hilaire, Sr A15 HomePage: http://home.adelphia.net/~msaint/

2.75mm x .03937 = .10826 inches
