klr shifting issues

Hello All, A friend sent me the following email and I'd like to get some ideas on what to investigate first. His bikle is a 2001 KLR with 3500 miles. Mine is a 2000 KLR with 4200 miles

I have noticed that I something has gone awry with my clutch so that it is not as easy start the bike when it is in gear and I am holding in the clutch. It works fine when I start it in neutral with the clutch out, but whatever switch makes it able to start with it in gear and the clutch in seems to be having an issue. Where do you start looking for something like that? Also something to think about is that in general I don't think my bike switches gears as easily as yours does. It wants to stop in neutral more than yours seemed to when going from 1-2 and from 2-1. It makes a louder click when going to 2nd than yours does....something to ponder.

I had the same problem once. Turned out to be where the ground (-) battery cable connected to the battery. Even thou it was tight it was not making a good connection. Check the ground wire where it connects to the battery and the bike ground point. Hopefully that will fix it. Good Luck Dave A12

The clutch safety switch is the wire coming off of the clutch perch. Trace it back to the wiring harness and just remove it entirely. Jumper 2 of the 3 wires (can't remember which ones, but I'm sure someone will pipe up...I think it's the middle wire to either of the other 2?).

That could just be break in time (1000 mile does a lot in the early stages of bikledom), or oil type, or a slightly loose clutch cable. dat brooklyn bum
