TA/TB 3 brush generator conversion to 2 brush.

Post by Harry Pyle » Tue Apr 04, 2000 3:47 am

Hi everyone, I wish to convert my TA to a 2 brush generator but still retain the CJR-3 Cut out and Fuse box., and also the 4 position Ignition/headlamp switch. I realise that I will need to install the aditional 'relay' for voltage regulation and retain the 'current cut out' one. Has anyone done this modification using the complete TC regulator innards ? by grafting them to the inside of the CJR-3 box (there is ample room). Is it just a matter of deleting the F1 connection on the H/Lamp switch and Cut out box and leaving The F2 and D as is ? I have heard that Bill Bollendonk/USA may have done this conversion to his TA, but he is in Oz with his MGA at the moment attending The MG National Meeting in Newcastle...as such he may not be getting the groups e-mail. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Harry

Cut out and Fuse box.........<

Well there is a version of the CJR3 unit with exactly this Cut out and
Regulator set up - it was used, I think, for just a very few pre war Rover
cars. I've only seen one in the last 20 years, and it's new and in front of
me now!

So - I have this unused one of these in front of me now, along with a new
old stock TA/TB Cut-out only CJR3, and also a TC RF 95 and a RF 106 beside
them (the TC/D 9 and 7 pole units) for comparison.

There are some difference in the Bakalite base mouldings of the two CJR3s.

I don't see any problem in fitting a cut out and regulator unit, though the
units each have appropriate and different shapes moulded into them which
will need to be allowed for, and the original cut out unit just has a plain
base that you will have to drill in such a way that if you went back to
original configuration, the holes would show.

You won't be able to retain the current cut out unit, which is in the
centre of the CJR3, and so you will have to take the combined unit from an
RF 95 or RF 106 and use that instead, and wire accordingly. You will also
need a new cover - the original TA/B metal cover only had to cover the cut
out and is 1.625 inches "high", the bakalite cover for the cutout/regulator
version is 2.5 inches high to give the needed clearance and cooling. The
RF95/106 covers are not long enough for the CJR3 units.

Re the ignition switch - you can use that but simply do away with the
resistance, and not utilise the high/low charge positions and wire as for a
PLC6 TC type switch.

But what's wrong with a 3 brush system anyway? Just as easy to maintain and
rewind as a 2 brush.

Regards

Clive Sherriff
