MG's at New Orleans!

Post by 1939mgtb » Mon Mar 21, 2005 5:43 am

My wife and I returned last night from a show in New Orleans where we were treated well indeed, proving once again that MG is the marque of friendship!! In spite of our driving our Morris Minor (known as the SuperFormance Morris). New Orleans lies about 547 miles from our house, in the delta country - this for the benefit of our European friends. We blasted off in the SFM at leisurely time in the morning on Friday, arriving at Gene and Ann Gillam's home before they got home from work. This gave us plenty of time to check out alternative entries into the garage for later nocturnal "visits". Kidding. Max gas mileage recorded by the SFM was 52 mpg at 70mph....but we burn premium, and so lost some economy at the present gas prices. We spent a very relaxing evening with the Gillam's, with Gene showing the TC Special now living in his garage. Cycled fendered with anti-tramp bars, etc. it is a roadracer for the street! Gene, this car HAS to have a name.... In the morning, aided by the wonderfully damp Gulf Coast air, I wiped off the 183 million bugs from my collection on the front of the SFM, and we were off to the show! In New Orleans, we were treated to a visit to the home of another Mardi Gras T Club member, whose name I have ashamedly forgotten. For T folks, he had laid on a - how to describe this? - "wonderful" is lame, but all l can come up with just now - breakfast. Fresh breads, NO style, strawberries and cream, jams, marmalades, the list is LONG, and to assuage your thirst, there was the choice of champagne, great coffee, fruit juices or tea. On the rear parking area was his Mk2 Jag, a B, etc. and the street as well as his drive soon filled with T cars of every sort. This included a totally original 1500 TF. Great story with this car, as well as a wonderful patina. We then drove to the show, a few blocks away, registered and parked. Leaving my wife with her car, I wandered over to the MG-T area to continue talking MG. I found a fellow who allowed me to crawl around his car and sketch the wire routing for a resto in my garage - many thanks to this friendly anonymous fellow! Around two to three PM, it was announced over the loud speakers that the T guys had cake and champagne. This was totally ignored by the MG group, busy cleaning their cars. Yeah, right. Everyone sat around with pieces of MG cake balanced on their laps (said so right on top of the frosting), and a (nother) glass of champagne talking MG. Great stuff! By now, my wife had abandoned her Morris and joined the MG group! As the show broke up before the awards banquet, we joined Pepe and Claudia Merrick, Gene and Ann for another impromptu "snack" of a large variety of food, and what was by now another ubiquitous glass of champagne. We were finished just in time for the banquet! An aside on Pepe and Claudia, who are two of the most memorable of characters! They arrived, she with a parasol and he in WW1 British RFC dispatch carrier uniform, on 1913 Triumph motorcycle equipped with a wicker side car! Hilarious fun! Claudia's Jag XK 120 was a very nice car as well, driven daily, as British cars should be! At the awards, Gene got the top TC award, another TABC lister got second, Mike took first in Small Sedan with his lovely MG Y type, and Carol took second with the SuperFormance Morris! A great deal of fun was had by all, and we headed back to Gene and Ann's about 1 1/2 hours away. *Note to those driving over Lake Ponchetrain at night in short wheelbase English cars at 70 mph...the pavement is designed as a multiple launching area. Fasten your seatbelts! You will spend a large portion of your time in the air! Wheeeee! Driving home yesterday, the only casualty of the trip was the SU fuel pump on the SFM, which took early retirement near Meridian, Mississippi. Fortunately, a electronic pump was available and fitted quickly. Carol and I very much enjoyed the show, the wide variety of MG's, (and other cars including another TABC lister's Morgan!), the food, the folks, in short - everything about the trip!! Thanks to the Mardi Gras MG-T group for a wonderful time! Thanks to Gene and Ann Gillam for having us in their home! If any of you guys remember this show next year, don't miss it! Now for Sebring............! In an MG, this time! Best, Ray "And now for the latest report on Picasso's progress over to Reg Moss on the Guildford by-pass." Glad you enjoyed it as much as we did. Lucky for us the SuperFormance Morris was switched to negative ground some time ago. Otherwise, we might have had a bit more trouble finding a fuel pump in a place where folks would stop to ask, "Is that a Volkswagon?" ;-) But they all tried to help, directing us to the nearest car parts house, then following us to make sure we got there safely. Even the breakdown was fun! Best, Ray "Yes, cigarettes. My hovercraft is full of eels."
