King Pin Cotter Pins

Hi Everyone,

I have an old front axle that I am stripping ready for straightening. I've tried to remove the cotter pins that secure the king pins and they are not moving. 

On my TB they come out towards the front of the car. Is this always the case? I have always assumed that the hole through the axle for the pins must be tapered. Can someone confirm this. Finally has anyone any good methods for removing these or maybe I am just not hitting them hard enough.?

Jeff , No, the axle hole is not tapered, the cotter pin is, and that locks up on the flat of the kingpin, drawn into place by the lock nut at the thin end of the taper. They can indeed be most difficult and annoying to remove. If you have to resort to drilling, go in from the head end, not the threaded end, Sometimes a smallish drilling will be enough to release it, and, rather counter intuitively, after a days soaking in a penetrating oil, actually whacking the pin tight a couple times from the head end, and then trying to remove it conventionally from the threaded end will work as the hearty thwack can break the holding bond on the taper. Likewise a hit on either end of the kingpin can serve the same purpose, but you will probably burr over the end of the pin, and will need to file this burr off before removing the pin from the axle or it will jam of course. Hi Jeff, A method that I have used which takes about 10 minutes, is to use a stout vice and a couple of large nuts placed over the end of the pin which is to come outwards and just tighten the vice jaws and when the pressure gets high enough the pin will pop. This assumes that the axle is off the car which is implied by the fact that you are stripping it. If it is still on the car, then a stout 'G' clamp will do the job in situ.However, be aware that when it does pop, it goes with a loud bang, like a pistol being fired. However much you are expecting it, it will make you jump. If your head is under the car wing you will inevitably bang it. Nick is right, forget my ramblings I didn t realise the axle was off. I had to think which was easier, take the axle off and use my 10 ton press or drill it out. Drilling sounded easier, only took 10 minutes.

Hi Geoff,

Without looking they should come out to the rear. If they are the correct style pins they should have a domed head that acts as a steering lock stop.

And when you get them out could I give a plug for Roger's original style cotter pins which not only incorporate an axle bump stop but also have a nut to jack them out for easier removal.
As for Chris Howard's contention that " these days we use standard metric bolts/nuts and therefore also need metric spanners.". Well perhaps that is true for some of us Chris but it's not for this one here.  I get quite annoyed about people who use the "wrong" nuts and bolts without marking them in some way as they are creating problems for those who come after them.  Accepted that we all make decisions under pressure to, say, use a metric fine bolt on the engine because that is all we have to hand (and how many of us have a stock of them) and not many problems would occur here as the thread is at least correct.  My main beef is with aftermarket manufacturers who ignore the original threads completely and use metric threads WITHOUT TELLING US.  An example I give is the aftermarket water pumps which, among other problems, have a modern metric thread and come without a nut!  I, being a trusting/naive soul went to my stock of BSF nuts and consequently ruined the thread.  Even if we have used the wrong thread ourselves we are building in problems if we don't mark the "wrong" nuts and bolts in some way as, as sure as eggs is eggs, we will have forgotten by the next time we come to work on this area.
