Well said Randy.
Gerry, It is not just where you are but what you are planning to do as well. Ocasional commuting, Combat commuting, Off road play or 500 Mile rallies in the snow...What do you want to be able to do AND what is the most probable schenario the gloves are needed for.
I use conventional winter gloves for most winter riding but with chopped up gallon milk jugs taped and strapped over the hand guards to make big hand guards. That keeps a lot of wind away from my hands letting the gloves to their thing better. For anything long range or under ~20 degrees I have a pair of snow mobile mittens. If you need cold weather gear remember that snow mobile gear is made for this and can be had for good prices. Snow mobile gloves and boots work great but you may need to move or change you shifter or even break pedal for the winter to adapt to the big boots.
More important for anybody thinking of jumping in the winter riding game for the first time!!!!!. Winter riding is more than watching for sand and ice and putting on more cloths. Your bike engine doesnt like no oil so if you are going to ride at low temp make sure you CONVERT YOUR OIL to a lower weight, Synthetic is king here. Also remember your TIRES WILL NOT WARM UP. you wont have the traction you are used to ever, including after trying to warm them up, and that is dangerous if you are not aware. Most important is you. If you get cold to the point that you are shivering you need to stop. The pooint at which the human body begins to shiver is a dangerous place to be on a bike. You will not be focused and you physical reaction time is dramatically slower. There is also a big risk of localized frost bite if there is a leak in your suit. Your overall body temp may make it seem minimal but pay attention to it. If there is a small area, like neck, glove gauntlet or small of the back wher ea stream of outside air is getting through it can freeze a small spot that wont feel like so much of an issue while you are riding. So PAY ATTENION TO YOU!

From my 4 consecutive years of winter commuting daily on my KLR in central PA, I have found that the best combination for comfort and control is with a summer glove, combined with grip heaters and "Hippo Hands" (or similar). In addition to summer gloves providing the most dexterity, the thin palm of the summer glove allows full heat transfer from the grips, while the hippo hands keep the cold breeze out, making for uber toasty hands, which makes the rider feel warmer all over.

Also depends very much as to whether you have heated grips and the stock hand guards/wind deflectors.

I do not ride in the cold anymore. LOL! But, spent many thousands of mile doing it at times traveling about the USA/Canada. Being from Louisiana, I really hate cold
My set up was Widder electic gloves, heated handgrips and shields ala BmW GS 11** s. I've done Hippo hands also and that is great for just getting down the road for me. As said, with that, lighter gloves and heated grips work. My last trip coming out of Canada was leaving Thunder Bay in 29 F temp on my 1250s Bandit with nothing but the widder gloves and vest. A vest helps big time warming up the core and letting blood flow better to the limbs. If I was about 40 years younger and doing that again, Hippo hands and electric gloves would probably be my choice. Everybody is different and you may have to try a few combos before you're satisfied with your setup.

"WINTER" Spring & Fall riding, Even HOT SUMMER AUGUST.
I'm from From Michigan, So When I Moved to Las Vegas, the I thought, Hey it's the Hot Desert. NOPE IT FREEZES at night just minutes after the Sun goes away.
Then Off to WARM San Diego CA, Well SURPRISE, by Winter, My body was so used to the warmer temps, that when 50 degree Winter rolled around, I had to go shopping for a Winter coat.
WHERE????? came up in a different response. LAYERS ARE BEST, ALONG WITH ELECTRIC.
I have traveled to the Rockies and Temps were WARM, Yet as the Elevation changed, TEMPS DROPPED!!!! Went from, Sunny & Sweaty & Sun burns to,.... FREEZING SNOW, With in an Hour.+
NORTH & SOUTH Sides of Mountains of even Simple Forest, In the Spring is a HUGE ISSUE.
In The Smokies In Late March, It was Hot on the South side of the Mountains were were Riding through, And Yet As the Rodes changed to the NORTH SIDE, (4 to 30 minutes) There was Still ICE, on the Roads at times.
Layering did NOT WORK. We were Zipping up our coats etc, on the North sides, and Unzipping and Sweating on the South. (Layering? We would have been stopping every 10 minute or so to change our layers.)
Take Layers, If you are ever lucky enough to Ride up HIGH in the Mountains, Even in Hot 90f August, there is still SNOW, UP on the Mountains. (Hence COLDER.)

WHERE????? came up in a different response. LAYERS ARE BEST, ALONG WITH ELECTRIC. I have traveled to the Rockies and Temps were WARM, Yet as the Elevation changed, TEMPS DROPPED!!!! Went from, Sunny & Sweaty & Sun burns to,.... FREEZING SNOW, With in an Hour.+ NORTH & SOUTH Sides of Mountains of even Simple Forest, In the Spring is a HUGE ISSUE. (Layering? We would have been stopping every 10 minute or so to change our layers.) Take Layers, If you a re ever lucky enough to Ride up HIGH in the Mountains, Even in Hot 90f August, there is still SNOW, UP on the Mountains. (Hence COLDER.) positive crankcase ventilation system

The pressure pulsations in the crankcase are more than adequate to expel gasses from the crankcase via the original vent hose as anyone who has tested that outlet will have experienced. I reamed the hose nipple in the air box from the original 13/64" to over 3/8" to increase outlet size as wanted to continue to discharge into the air box to avoid oil droplets making a mess. It was also a concession to emissions by continuing to direct the crankcase venting into the carb/engine intake.
I placed a power brake booster vacuum check valve from a 5.3 Jeep Grand Cherokee into the outlet hose and a 90 degree hose elbow onto the air box nipple.
FWIW, the reason Kawasaki originally use such a small hole (13/64") into the air box is to muffle the crankcase venting noise.
The intake air for the positive crankcase ventilation comes from the left side of the air box, between air filter and carb boot. It's high enough up that the rubber grommet and (another Grand Cherokee) check valve are hidden by the Tupperware side panel. The hose from the check valve runs to a 1/8 NPT brass elbow and hose barb in the oil filler cap. The stock plastic KLR oil filler cap is replaced by an aluminum Honda XL250 timing port plug which is threaded to 1/8" NPT.
The air flow is quite significant in through the right side check valve and out by the left side. I will see what I can do now to introduce more moisture into the engine sump to monitor how quickly it is cleared by the positive venting.
In this, the piston is the pump and doubt that a multi-cylinder engine would work as well.

The "positive" is describing a positive or induced flow of clean air through the engine internals as in automotive engines. People often place an automotive PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve into the KLR breather hose with no inlet provided. I have no idea what they imagine that this accomplishes, especially since there is no means to air entry into the crankcase with that system. They are not ventilating the crankcase but merely allowing excess gasses to escape. Placing a PCV valve into the hose can only act as a restriction. ------ Original Message ------ From: "slash5er@... Norm, Did you rig up a pump? How are you getting positive air? Thanks. JohnD
