That would be me......  I sell an assortment of shims in the most popular sizes.  At $3.99 each they are pretty cheap compared to some dealers prices costing two or three times that much.  I have them in stock too.   Fred

Is there such a thing available? I'm getting ready to do a long overdue valve check myself and would like to save myself the time of waiting for the nearest dealership to order the shims. -- ________________________ Mick LeTourneaux letourn@... valve shims
Just an FYI-At our local Colorado Springs wrenching session last Saturday (thanks again, Tom), we did the 500 mile valve adjustment on my new KLR. Using Bogdan's knowledge and expertise, we determined the needed replacement shims and installed them. Bolted everything back together and then measured valve clearances again. Surprise-the clearances were actually less than they had been with the original shims.
We unbolted it all again and pulled out the shims. We then carefully (with a DIGITAL Micrometer, thanks Tom and Swede) measured each shim and realized that the stamped numbers were off by several mm. Just enough to screw everything up. Luckily I had bought enough shims (thanks Fred) to go down another size to make it all work out in the end.

Moral: Measure your shims before popping in the replacement ones and then do the math to determine what you need to drop down to. Don't trust those stamped numbers!

Just wondering.....
Collectively the group has probably viewed a million shims. Has
anyone ever found the stamp to differ from the actual valve? I never
measure them, but maybe I need to get more parinoid?

Yeah, me last Saturday when working on Andre's bike. Both the original shim and the one we replaced it with were a bit thicker than spec. Therefore, we didn't get the desired clearance; it measured tighter than it should have. We had to go down one shim size. No don't know of any..... Fred is the best bet. My local dealer charged
me 10 bucks a shim with a 10% discount. Some dealers swap. Mine didn't..

I adjust the valves on my '01 (822 miles) today. Two were out of
spec (tight of course), but I loosened up one more of them up as
well.

So all of you that suggested I not skip this early check up, thanks!

If I do say so myself, ShimCalc is one hell of a useful software
program to help with the calculations and documentation.
