what oil?? what air fuel mixture
The reason I didn t comment about your oil question is that everyone has an opinion and I don t value mine anymore than anyone elses. I don t care to express what is basically an emotional response to which any one can disagree. Makes no sense to me.
There are almost 9000 members on this list and when you said there was a group opinion after only one or maybe two messages, I thought it odd that anyone could say that this group was of a like mind about anything. I tend to disregard those that seem to be the most opinionated or want to push their agenda aggressively. Everyone has an opinion and other body parts, so I don t take one person s advice as gospel until it has been around for a while and is consistent. If you want to take others ideas, you need a much wider spectrum of advice than one list and from one person s words.
Oil and a few other things have been hotly debated for many many years. It is all about emotion. If it makes you feel better than it is probably a good thing to do. I doubt that it is going to make a dimes worth of difference using just about any kind of oil in the KLR. As long as it is changed when it needs to be changed, I think the KLR could run on vegetable oil and do just fine. If Rotella is handy and cheap enough I d say it would be worth a try and that way you will know if you like it as much as someone else s advice. It s not going to hurt your engine so I wouldn t worry about that. There are many oils that will be just fine in the KLR and I think more importantly the level and how dirty it becomes is much more important to the life of your engine. I chose to use BelRay motorcycle oils for several reasons. Firstly it is a good oil designed specifically for motorcycles, wet clutches and transmissions. It is available at most all motorcycle shops in case you are away from home and want to add some while on the road. This is just my personal preference, but if I needed oil, I would use anything and feel comfortable that my engine is protected and is much better than running low on oil or running it too dirty.
Glad you are enjoying your KLR and using it like it was intended.

I'm sorry Fred since you didn't comment I assumed you agreed that there wasn't any problem with using rotela oil. I read this forum all the time and have learned so much from you guys, consequently. I know that your on here all the time so if I presumed you agreed sorry...
Do you agree with this column that I pasted that says using the rotela oil will do damage or cause diminished longevity then. .?
Thank you again for all the good advice....a couple years ago when I bought my bike I came on here to get advice on how to ride the beast off road and you gave me some tips that helped immensely..I now ride off road as much as I'm able...

Was it you, Jeff, who said he had trouble finding neutral at a standstill with Rotella? I have the same problem, not too serious but I still don't get how the oil could cause that.

James, If I'm the Jeff you are asking... I haven't had any issues using Rotella. Before Rotella I tried Valvoline automotive oil and also did oil analysis on it. I could tell when it was sheared to about a 30 weight because I would have trouble finding neutral and clutch actuation would get touchy. With Valvoline and oil analysis I was only getting about 1,000 smiles before it needed to be changed. James,
//who said he had trouble finding neutral at a standstill with Rotella?//
Yes, it was me. When I was using the Rotella T6, I found that after a thousand miles or so, the transmission would start getting "notchy" and it was hard to get it in to neutral at a stop. I switched to Mobil Delvac and I don't have that problem any more. My particular KLR's transmission is a quick indicator of oil condition.
