...and not one person questioned why I'd want to put knobbies on a FZ8 naked sport bike that'll never see a dirt road. Wow. :-) eddie

eddie. How would we guess from your post that your XYZ would never see a dirt road? Eric Green (Colorado DS rider) put knobblies on a sportster and rode it to South America into the Amazon Rain Forrest. oh, he rode it back as well. If you come to the annual Black Hills circus, (and keep your eyes on the bikes, cough) you will see all kinds of Milwaukee pigs with unusual tire combinations, to include D606. Why? Because they can. shrug. revmaaatin.

I can't quickly cite my sources without searching but the way I recall it, optimum tire pressure is such that the pressure rises *no more than 10%* from fully cold to fully warmed up. Obviously this is a function of ambient temperature as well, making winter psi numbers differ from summer. (Keith Code maybe?) Under-pressure tires generate more heat which causes the psi to go up more than 10%. And, the increased rolling resistance lowers mpg, and who wants that? All this is for street riding of course. I recently installed a TKC80 front and per someone's suggestion was running it at 20psi on the street. The idea was that it would "cup" or saw tooth less from braking as there would be more knobs squished down under braking. Not true. Got the saw tooth effect going on in less than 1k miles. Not sure if it's from aggressive braking or cornering but I've been doing both. Not extremely aggressive but not just cruising either. This does not bode well for my hopes of getting 10k from the tire. Despite riding less than 200 miles of dirt roads in the last 23k miles, I wanted a knobby on the front to make those 200 miles more enjoyable. And I do like the grip of the TKC80 on the asphalt. So I increased it to 28psi. We'll see how it goes. Kind of spendy for a tire if it doesn't last. I'll be using the rear brake a lot more and trying to avoid hard braking situations to save the knobs. I also just last weekend installed a Shinko 705 Trailmaster on the rear in 130/90-17. It seem liked a very soft tire and spooned on easily. The bead seated with a bicycle pump! The Kenda 761 it replaced lasted 8k miles but was not much fun the last 500 miles. Having a 90 series aspect ratio sits the bike up a bit taller and results in a slight increase in final drive ratio. The tire was great from the get-go and did not require scrubbing in much. The front was already well scrubbed in and thus I was provided a dramatic demonstration of the effect the rear tire has on handling. The Kenda had gotten downright squirrely. The first ride I had to head up Glendora Mtn Rd. which is rough and twisty asphalt. Upon my return some 40 miles later I observed that the little hairs were already gone from the center of the tread further leading me to believe that this is a soft tire and I will replacing it in less than the 8k miles I got from the Kenda. As I mentioned I've done 23k miles on this KLR (which has 47k total) and on the front it has had a Kenda K270, a Pirelli Scorpion A/T, a Kenda 761, and now the TKC80. The Chinese tires have not been very satisfactory on the front of the bike. They work well enough on the back for my limited skills and speeds and are cost effective. The Pirelli Scorpions were great street tires and lasted 12k front 8k rear. They were ok on hard dirt roads, not so much so in gravel or softer surfaces. P.S. Avoid Michelin tubes like the plague! High-priced and I pinched it three times before tossing it and using my old (Chinese) tube, which cleaned up good as new.
