Wondering if there are any options for replacing the OEM CDI Igniter on a 2008 KLR Part number 21119-0095 other than the Near $400 from the dealer? I can't find a used one, anyone have any ideas? Michael

This CDI from Ricks is for the 2007 and earlier KLR, but I'd contact them and ask if it's compatible with a 2008. It's a long shot. If not, I'd watch Ebay for a used one. Fred has told me a used one is a roll of the dice, it either works or doesn't and if it doesn't you're stuck. http://ricksmotorsportelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=15-207&pmc=MDdLYXdLTFI2NTA= ________________________________ From: Michael To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2012 3:57 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] CDI Igniter for 08 KLR Wondering if there are any options for replacing the OEM CDI Igniter on a 2008 KLR Part number 21119-0095 other than the Near $400 from the dealer? I can't recall ever reading about anyone with an '08 or newer having a problem with the CDI. For that price I'd double- and triple-check everything else. Try new plug coil wires etc. to be absolutely certain the CDI has failed. Then maybe compare the part with the '07 and earlier part. If one of those can be found and adapted it might not hurt to try it. Also, there are Asian scooter parts all over eBay. Single cylinder CDIs for under $50, if you want to try them. I don't think you can hurt any of the other electrical components of the ignition system; plug coil wires etc. by trying a non stock part. -- Ian Francisco http://www.scarletfuries.com http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Scarlet-Furies/121218125931 Thu Oct 25, 2012 1:57 am (PDT) . I don't post here often, but I may have info of some use here. What is it doing? My friends 08 had an intermittent tach jump, stall, cut out, and hard/no start. Not necessarily all at the same time. After eliminating what we could and going through the harness 3 times we almost condemned the CDI unit. One last really close check revealed a small chaff in the, I think brown or brown and white, wire near the triple tree where it goes to the ignition. It was very small and hardly noticeable as the wrapping tape would hide it or shift position when unsecuring the harness for inspection. After this repair it has never done this again. We also learned that the CDI unit 08 and up has a different connector than 07 and back. just my two cents. Hope this helps. John [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Here's a generic Chinese scooter cdi for under $10. For that price a little experimentation wouldn't hurt much. I'd be tempted to buy a harness for the same scooter just for the female connector that goes with this part, then get out wiring diagrams and figure out how to splice it in. There's a chance that the sensor on the rotor is not compatible somehow and wouldn't trigger the cdi properly, but for just a few dollars it may work. The trick would be to wire it in without damaging the KLR original harness and connector in any way. It would be nice to be able to go back to stock if desired. http://www.ebay.com/itm/50cc-150cc-Scooter-CDI-Box-For-Tao-Tao-Peace-Jcl-Johnway-Sunny-/170915213573?pt=Other_Vehicle_Parts&hash=item27cb573105&vxp=mtr It's not convenient to adapt a non-stock part but it's worth a little work, if you can get it done, to save $400. Did some of my own plumbing last week. Wasn't fun, but I kept reminding myself of the money I was keeping in my wallet and out of the plumber's. There a few '08-up cdis on fleabay right now. Buying a used electrical part online for $70-200 is sketchy, but you might get lucky. Here's one for $70. Searched for "klr 650 cdi igniter". "klr650 ignitor" might turn up different results. http://www.ebay.com/itm/08-Kawasaki-KLR650-KL650-KLR-IGNITER-CDI-IGNITOR-IGNITION-MODULE-/130776074408?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e72dc88a8&vxp=mtr On Thu, Oct 25, 2012 at 8:46 PM, Michael Dennis Van Horn wrote:

Amazing. Does this prove the ALLEGEDLY fact that ALLEGEDLY all things on E-Bay are stolen? I mean, really, a running bike is disassembled for parts? Really? Nothing suspicious about that... Yes, that could work, I guess. I never thought of it, but yeah, it could work. So you become a parts broker or wrecking yard without a license. V e r y I n t e r e s t i n g. Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

I've seen people do it. Buy old/not running bikes and just sell the parts. You can make reasonable money doing it. -Jeff Khoury

I'm with your RW-- The scrapping yards seem to have a penchant for chopping up a good bike. and it makes you/me somewhat suspicious. then I look at what I have in the garage.... Do you really think the insurance company is going to replace the bike with something of equal value? ah, no. they are going to pay NADA value and move on. Yeah, the sum of the parts are worth more than NADA value by at least 2x in most instances. revmaaatin.
