2nd flat in two weeks

Post by Stephen North » Fri Oct 12, 2012 9:14 am

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to this. Here's my very unscientific theory as to what is going on. The 606 tread is a very tall blocky knob with a lot of space around each block. Contrary to other theory's about the front tire "setting the nail up" for the back to drive over it, I think it's happening simultaneously with the back tire only. The nail head contacts a block, flips up and into the tire IN-BETWEEN the blocks. (If the front were setting the nail up, the back would impale itself through a block once in a while, not In between the blocks every time.) If the blocks were closer together, the nail would never get a chance to invert, because it wouldn't have the space to do it. So what makes the 606 such a great tire in mud and loose surfaces, could also make it more susceptible to nail grabbing. Anyway, just my theory. 5 or 6 gears?

Post by Eddie » Fri Oct 12, 2012 2:41 pm

I've got about 1,400 miles on a new XT1200 Super Tenere twin, which is timed to feel and pull like a big single. It's got 6 gears. But, I frequently find myself cruising along at 55-60mph, getting 50+ mpg indicated......in 5th gear by accident. Ditto my former DL1000. (Only without the good fuel economy. Geez, that bike was thirsty!) eddie

there a swap for that? DR650 with a DR350 gearbox. (Actually, I have never felt the need for another gear on my DR, or on my KTM, for that matter. Neither do you hear guys crying out for more gears on the various fora for those bikes.)

5 or 6 gears?

Well, I have a 13 tooth front sprocket, so there isn't much difference between fourth and fifth. What I really want is a wide ratio six speed. Robert P. Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068

So how's the bike off the line with that small a sprocket? - Bill
