Er ........... my so called mechanics have both spent years racing and tuning race bikes and teaching motorcycle maintenance at a local Jr. College. Anybody that can work on a 4 valve head Ducati gets my respect ......... even more so than some on the list. Criswell

that wasn't ron's guys. That was my guys. I used to use rotella 15w/40 but have now switched to the valvoline motorcycle oil. I do believe that my shifting has stayed smoother for longer than what the rotella did. Ed . Who has spent most of his adult life fixing the engineers bad designs and doing what the engineers say is impossible. In factories. A-1 30k and dead and gone. A-9/12 45K and running strong.

Did my first oil change today - went off without a hitch. Don't know how long since the last change - the bike's new to me, probably about 3K or less, but what black grimy swill came out! That clear golden oil going in just made me feel good all under. I don't have a torque wrench - do you need to torque the drain plug? Or is "good and tight" tight enough? A very little bit of super fine metal powder on the magnet. 2 1/2 quarts filled the viewer window up to the very top - I don't want to rehash that old topic. But it's dramatic when you see it for the first time. Ryan

Clymer says 17 foot pounds. The pan is aluminum and very easy to strip the treads out of. I use hand tight then just a bit more with my hand right on the head of the ratchet not the end. Any time aluminum is involved less is more. Meaning you can always put more torque on if it is too loose. If it is too tight you just ripped the threads out. -jf

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Ryan, I suggest you don't use a torque wrench on stuff that really doesn't need to be torqued. The drain plug just needs to be snug. Cam caps need to be torqued. The 17 ft lbs torque figure is something you could do but... did you replace the aluminum crush washer? Are the threads clean and does the plug turn smoothly into the case? Is your torque wrench accurate at 17 ft lbs? Lots of opportunity to strip the case threads. I think whomever reported just holding the head of the rachet to snug the drain plug is giving some good advice. It doesn't take much torque to keep the drain plug in the case and leak free if you are using a good crush washer or the NAPA soft washer. I suggest folks replace the aluminum crush washer with the NAPA 12mm soft washer. NAPA part number is 704-1371. Cost is about $1 each. When you put the soft washer on the drain plug and install the plug you'll maybe notice the feel is different when you tighten the plug. All it takes is finger tight and just a tad (1/8+ ) turn more to make the drain plug seal, tight and leak free. You can reuse the soft washer a lot of times. I just put mine back in today from my 1,750 smile oil change interval. I hope to have the oil analysis results back tomorrow afternoon. After a quick look at the results and a check with Blake about them I'll report to the list. The oil is Rotella 15w/40 dino. I use the same oil. I'll be curious to see the results. I used it with great success in my Honda XR650L, and that hot-running air-cooled thumper is a much tougher environment for oil than the KLR.
