This rifle comes with Ruger rings and a 20 round steel magazine. I also purchased a 5 round poly mag for mine. You can mount a scope conventionally close to your eye or attach to the Picatinny rail for more eye relief. These guns are becoming available. I stopped in two shops in Grand Junction, CO. and they both had them in stock.

I recently saw the scout rifle at an NRA event. They said there is a long waiting list to get one. I really liked it. It had peep sights and a place to attach weaver scope mounts. Pesonally, I like the scope mounted closer to the eye. That is the only fault I have with the gun. It has a large capacity mag and really looks and feels good.

For having nothing but fun my Ruger 10/22 is a classic and not so
expensive to shoot all the time.

I recall Jeff Cooper's campaign to popularize this design, and it made sense. I don't vouch for the accuracy of this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scout_rifle.

Tech-Whaaaaa?? pbbllllttt!! (sound of a baby eating creamed spinach)
the KLR of guns is the Rem 870 pump. IMO
the definitive utility weapon (for short-range work) .
Low-tech, relatively low-cost, hi-reliability, like a KLR.
The design hasn't changed radically since the early 50's.

Fred, you're a dangerous man - starting a thread like this on a busy Monday morning. We could spend hours relating our experience w/ scout rifles.

Ruger has come out with a rifle that sounds by the description (except for the weight) very similar to the KLR. the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle, the one rifle to have if you could only have one. It is the perfect lightweight, hard-hitting, do-it-all bolt-action rifle - where rugged, reliable Ruger meets the practical, tactical.
