rare find and vacuum

Post by Glenn Sturley » Tue Jul 24, 2012 5:22 pm

Hi All, Last week I found an Acerbis Long Range tank for my "C" model. I had searched for over 2 years with no luck. When I saw the ad for it I couldn't believe it, I rushed over to the seller and bought it immediately. Acerbis no longer make this tank so I reckon I got bargain at AU$250! The tank came with 2 taps as supplied originally and the fuel cap. All was good. I decided to put a standard "C" tank vacuum tap on the lefthandside to retain the vacuum line. I left the supplied tap on the right. I had to remove the reserve pipe on the "C" tap to fit it but the mounting holes were in the same spot. Put it all together with an added "T" piece to join the lines, left to right. Still all good. The solenoid cover on the left was fouling the lines so I cut a small section of it out and restored it to it's normal location. Fantastic, check for leaks....OK. Start bike......OK Take for ride......UHOH! The bike was backfiring when backing off. Bugger! Returned home...thought....thought some more, then it came to me that there must be something messed up with the carby as that was the only thing on the bike that I had modified. I removed the tank and found that the vacuum line to the petcock was not connected. I had pushed it off when reconnecting the solenoid cover but hadn't checked it. Restored the vacuum line and cover then checked to see it was still OK. Fired up the motor and hooray!.......Problem solved. Summary: - If there is backfiring when backing off check for air leaks in fuel system. I filled the tank and it holds about 23.5litres. This gives me an approximate range of over 400kms (250miles). The extra weight on the front of the bike has lowered it a little and made it feel more stable. This obviously changes as the fuel gets used but is another small advantage when carrying all my camping gear on the rear. I have also reduced the number of farkles left to make my bike an individual and have customised to my liking. I am very happy!!!!!!! I'm not a big fan of loud either, but after picking up that FMF Q4 in a trade from another lister, rejetting, repacking and installing the quiet core, the Dirt Ninja now definitely has more mid-to-high grunt. It revs more freely and pulls harder in highway roll-ons. It's a little louder than my conservatively-modded stock exhaust, but not too much so. So I guess the conclusion is: If you want more low-end, go V&H. If you want more on the top, go FMF. -Jeff Khoury

Worse yet, it has actually given the bike more grunt off the bottom and in the mid range. I've always been a proponent of stock exhausts, but I don't think I can give up the new found ability to steer with the rear wheel. Fortunately it came with the quiet insert (94db) and new packing. I've repacked it already and it made a huge difference in sound output. Unfortunately the spark arrestor that came with it is beyond its serviceable life, so I'll need to address that issue. It is louder than stock, but only when I lose control of the right wrist. I am now going to have to practice wrist control therapy to prevent myself from pissing of the local moose and bear populations. What have I done? da Vermonster

rare find and vacuum

G'day All, Further to my earlier post. I went to the local Kawasaki Dealer to pick up some parts and try the new fuel tank. Oh dear! There was fuel leaking from the carby overflow. So much that I used nearly 6 litres of fuel for a 50km trip. To cut a long story short, I removed the carby and found a very minute piece of gunk had worked it's way to the fuel supply needle and was stopping it from operating, hence the overflow. Many hours later and having learnt how to remove and replace the carby I resolved all the leaks. This included cleaning up the 2 petcocks which leaked fuel between positions. Took the bike for it's mandatory test ride and everything is fine. Having sorted the BIG tank installation it was now time to check how all the carrying facilities worked. I had a tank bag (magnetic) and Wolfman tank panniers. I sewed some straps on the tank bag and mounted everything on the tank. Worked out a treat! Everything fits neatly and leaves room for me. Glenn, You will have to post pictures in PHOTOs section, located in the top left corner of the site selections. Then, tell us the file name. If the file/photo set you post starts with an 'a' it will be near the top; the photo's paginate alphabetically. r.
