tool kit
I have seen references to a frame mounted tool kit made of PVC on
previous posts, but I can't find links that will hook me up with the
information I need to make one. If you can direct me please do so.

There is a Fredette wrench that handles both axles, and is much lighter than the ratchet. You don't really have to go overboard on the axle torque, but the Fredette will still handle it. You can step on it to break the nuts free. I think the part number is in the FAQ, and Fred might have it listed on his site. Krokko -- Dr. J. Mark,
Taking a quick look at your list. How do you remove axle nuts? I think
I carry wrenches that fit the Dual-Star axle nuts too. Don't remember
the size.
I also carry a small multimeter, stainless 0.040" safety wire (maybe 10
feet or so), chain side link press (homemade) and tire tools including an
electric air compressor. Of course the original question only asked
about wrenches. : )

Oh, ya... I forgot about my tire irons and air pump. I knew I was missing something. I see no need for a multimeter in my 'general' tool kit. For trips that take me 1000 miles from home, I tend to carry a few other things in my kit. A pocket blow torch and solder for example. That stuff and the safety wire is bordering on spare parts rather than tools. I didn't want to get into that. Thanks for the reply and explanation. I'll have to take a look at the
Knipex Cobras pliers. I don't seem to need the multimeter for me but it
sure has come in handy for other peoples bikes. One of the best uses is
checking to see if a charging system is working. Only takes a minute and
eliminates a bunch of guessing. I took a butane soldering iron along on
the Great Divide Ride last year just so we wouldn't have any breakdowns
that would require it. Worked like a charm. : )

Thanks fellas for your input on tool kits for traveling. You're
right Mark, I did ask specificially about wrenches. The rest of the
stuff is a matter of common sense not size. I had never heard of
Knipex Cobra pliers, so I looked them up on the internet. They look
like a lot better options that the factory wrenches for removeing
axle nuts. You mention a metric folding allen key set. I tend to
prefer allen sockets. Will these work just as well and if so, what
sizes are common on the KLR? Thanks.

I don't know if I fit your criteria of being a 'world traveller': 12v pump; 8, 10, 12
14 mm 3/8 sockets w/ 3/8 stubby ratchet; BETTER 10, 12, 14 mm wrenches as
well as the stock sh*t; and, soon, Motion Pro Al tire-irons. More later....
