question re d606 tire............
For those of you who have used the Dunlop D606, I have a question, please; "How good are the D606 on the highway?" One review says that, "the D606's tread compound is engineered for good highway durability and grip".......... seems like it would be like riding on a zipper at highway speeds (ie, it would shake you to death?). I do like what one of our fellow posters pointed out, that is, that you can ride them even when they go flat.
So, to those of you who have used D606 tires, what are they like on the highway? BTW, I use my KLR as a street/highway daily rider. Thats why I want the feel of a street tire.

question re d606 tire............
I only notice the knobs on pavement at very, very low speeds. They handle
and grip adequately on hard slab. What they do do is generate a lot of
noise. Currently running 244 Shinkos which are very quiet in comparison and
don t give up much for a slightly less aggressive knob. Wearing well and
cheap.

Not saying the relay is a better solution, but I always wire it in
parallel with the existing circuit and tie it in directly to the OEM
connector. That way if either the relay or switch fails, the circuit
continues to operate as normal - all of the new wiring and connections
are tied to the relay and switch and don't affect the OEM circuit. With
the three-position switch as part of the OEM circuit, you introduce
several failure points (all of the new wires/connections as well as the
switch) and also have a "fail" position in the switch that disables the
OEM circuit - whether corrosion or inadvertent switch actuation. Again,
not saying he relay is a better solution but something to consider with
the three position switch.

Here's the simple version I installed. No relay required. Works perfectly.

question re d606 tire............
No problems on road. Steel grated bridges? I was sure I was going to die
or the knobs would get stuck in the holes. It was like riding on ice for a
quarter mile.

question re d606 tire............
Eddie,
With reference to the D606 I've been through 3ea rear and 2ea front tires in the past 18 months on my '00 KLR. That includes 4 trips to Moab, south end of the CDT, Overland in Az, numerous day trips into the local mtns, weekend singletrack in the desert, and daily commuting in the metro of Albuquerque.
I generally run the 606 at 28 pounds front and rear. For sandy desert work I drop down to 15 pounds at both ends.
I have found them more stable than I expected they would be, whether the superslab at WOT or in the twisty mountains. They are much better than the IRC110 and TKC80 I tried before when it comes to deep/loose surface, and about as good on the highway as those.
I average around 3500 miles on a rear tire, 6000 on the fronts.
If you're hard on the front brakes the front tire will wear saw-tooth on you. When I see that starting I reverse the tire on the rim and it soon evens out. It doesn't seem to affect handling or stability as it wears.
The rear tire usually wears flat across the center and this doesn't seem to affect performance on road or off. It does however make them significantly more noisy on the superslab. I wear earplugs on highway runs and don't notice the howling much.
If you like getting the KLR in rowdy terrain, you'll probably like the agressive nature of the 606 w/o suffering much (other than noise) highway performance over a more street oriented DS tire.
Last time in Moab Fred and I visited about some of the European tires. He summed it up well with his statement that I'd have a hard time finding a better balanced tire given my preference to ride to where I can get into aggressive offroading (for a KLR).
I plan to put them on my recently acqquired DR-Z as soon as I can wear out the Kenda 760s that came with it. I've found the 760's compound too hard and stiff to grip as well as I like on the pavement.

question re d606 tire............
One of the two street wrecks that I've had in 28 years of riding was on a steel-grate drawbridge in the rain. Those things are death.

Mine was the Park Street drawbridge in Alameda, CA. It's famous for being the bridge that Sandra Bullock was chased across in the movie "The Net."

question re d606 tire............
Riding in the rain across flush mounted railroad tracks running
diagonally across the road. It's like an invisible hand just pulled the
bike out from underneath you.
With regard to tires, my KLR, new Cheng Shin C-878 tires, and one of my
favorite twisty mountain roads (Goldmine Road, Jonestown, PA) - with
anti-hydroplane grooves cut on most of the corners - was downright
scary, but I never fell. It felt like I was riding on 2 flat tires. They
got better as I put miles on them, but I decided they weren't so good
for road use and switched to Kenda K270s.
Twisties: Goldmine Road, Jonestown, PA
RR Tracks: 268 West Main Street, Mount Joy, PA
Great KLR fun: 45916 Balch Park Rd, Springville, CA
1000' MSL to 6000' MSL as fast as you dare to ride (about 45 minutes for me)
