I'm just wondering what that would be, because I can't think of a feature that DSM or Backcountry wouldn't cover...

OK, right. No service required (I'm sure you know GPS is forbidden on most airlines).
Do those cover Europe and Asia? If not, MotioX GPS might be a good backup if you travel there.

All of those apps I mentioned allow you to download maps for use offline (where there is no cell service), including topograpical maps in the case of DSM and BackCountry.

I'm using a Garmin Montana on my bike in the Philippines with the Garmin motorcycle rugged mount. Bike has only just over 4" of suspension travel, and roads are bad, so the unit takes a real beating. It is very robust, the touch screen and menus are very easy to use while on the go, waterproof, has included lithium battery, and you can also use AA cells in an emergency (just take out the lithium battery).
Some really nice features compared to my earlier Garmins (StreetPilot 2820, GPSMap 76CSx, others), including the ability to zoom out and still set the unit to show as much detail as you want. Nice big screen, maybe slightly bigger than my 2820, and IMHO more rugged than the 2820, which has been a very reliable unit for me.
Goes around 16 hours on a charge, if you do not have it plugged in. Great hiking and boating GPS as well.
They are a bit expensive (I paid around $460 a few months back), but IMHO I'd be very nervous using a phone GPS in a lot of the places and weather I've used this unit.

It's finally time to replace the POS Garmin Nuvi 205 GPS on my KLR.
I'm told the marine-based Garmin 276 (discontinued) is a great choice, if
you can find a used one at a reasonable price. What other units do folks
like? Any motorcycle-specific pros or cons to the unit you use?

sorai lithium battery install review video
I just got this video review link today from Shorai's newsletter. I have one of their previous versions of lithium battery in my klr650. By the looks of the battery in this review they have changed it considerably from the one in mine. The battery is now big enough to actually fit the box. Mine was so dinky that even with all the foam they included there was nowhere near enough foam to stuff in the massive gap left..... so it looks like they fixed that issue by using a much larger battery case..
Also they have apparently changed the terminal design. It looks like it is probably improved from the one on my earlier model Shorai battery.
FYI
