My iPhone with MotionX-GPS was solid as a rock on a trip where Google Maps was "Unable to connect. Unable to connect. Unable to connect. Warning. Warning. Google Maps (at least on Android) can download offline map tiles as well. BackCountry Navigator Pro and DualSport Maps are also good phone-based Navigation apps. -Jeff Khoury

I've use the 276C for years and still have one. You can still bid on them at Ebay but most go from 400 to 600 bucks. My first one cost about 800 or so bucks with ram mount set up, power cords, garmin memory cards ,. etc. I tried out a Zumo 550 and it was okay but not my old 276C. I have not tried the Montana yet so can't talk about it. For what I do with a GPS ; Checking out roads on the fly, marking points of interest, active track file and mainly just keeping track of where I'm at. I'm loving back roads not traveled too much. At the end of the day, I can download the track file to my laptop and save the file keeping all the information on Time/speed/ Where I was. I very seldom ever use routing. But do use the Gas station/Motel finder ( gotta watch that as lots of them on the garmin database are not there anymore or closed. At present, I keep an eye on Ebay and bid on some of them that come across and will luck out one day and get one more 276C for under 400. Oh, I don't do phone calls, or radio on the road,so don't need all that stuff on my units. Sometimes use my MP3 player to earbuds on the long stretches of road to entertain myself.

I was wondering the same thing. I cant decide which one to get. There is the TomTom app, Motion X and Navigon and Wazae(free). Can you guys load maps to any of those apps? Do they accept gpx files? I have some maps from advrider.com (TAT and other local rides) that i would like to do but am not sure if i can load them into the apps. Can anyone "elighten" me please? MotionX-GPS You can e-mail tracks to yourself or anybody, and MotionX-GPS supports Twitter and Facebook, if you care about that stuff. You can download maps anywhere that you have a connection. I did a Goggle search on Android GPS and read some pretty interesting stuff on the Android sites. But, for what I use a GPS for, the smart phones won't get er done.

I've tested it by downloading tiles, then throwing the phone into airplane mode. They work just fine. I'd say that the best is DualSport Maps, with BackCountry a close second. -Jeff Khoury
