Chained to a post with top quality chain and lock then covered is about as good as it gets. Short of the Scorpio alarm system I put on my A-16 that is. But that has it's drawbacks also. crosswinds causing engine to cut out.
I have a strange problem...
When it's really windy, I will be riding along on my 1997 KLR650 at steady throttle and my engine cuts out. I hold the throttle at a steady setting and it will momentarily bog when a big gust hits me crosswise. As soon as the wind is gone, it starts running like normal. This is happening at speeds between 45 and 70 MPH. Other than that, the bike runs excellent.
I've done the 22 cent mod: shimmed the needle, drilled the slide, and set the pilot air screw to 1.75 turns. I also have an IMS tank with a short breather tube with the one way check valve in the cap. I have a Visu-Filter In-Line Fuel Filter installed, the type with the porous brass filter.
Other than that, it's stock. Like I said, mostly the bike runs like a finely tuned engine, no stumbling, plenty of power, idles and starts fine every time. Any clues on what's going on with the crosswinds? I thought it was my imagination at first but it's been happening regularly.

Cross wind blowing into the carb vent line changing the pressure is a
guess on my part...thought I remember reading something similar on the
ascot forums.

I have experienced the same thing on other bikes. my guess is that the wind creates a low pressure area outside the airbox, which keeps the carburetor from drawing well.

Jeff,
I'm sure its not just the wind slowing me down, I can feel the engine power cut out. Not sure about the tach, I'll watch for it.

David, After reading the other ~6 answers, I would offer this as well: One poster suggested your carb is 'sucking wind'. I would check the carb vent line for complete air flow. In your list of mods, you do not have a Carb-vent T-Mod which is ususally for crossing water and very wet streets, is a worthy mod to be completed. Jeff suggested that it is an increase in headwind component. Even a 30-50mph gusting cross wind component gust can act like acting a adding a significant headwind to the bike; yes virginia, it will act like it is surging! I rode some 1700+ miles/3 days in such environment and I felt like a tattered flag when it was over. No virgina, you cannot open or refold the map when it is gusting 50+mph. Just for funsies; revmove the right airfilter door and see if that improves the airflow. I also had a slight surging; wattman suggested remvoming the door and riding like that. Yep, it ended the slight surging; it was starved for air! However, The addtional noise annoyance surpassed the surging annoyance. I now ride with the airfilter door in place. Did I mention the noise increase with the airfilter door removed. and one last thing- Is your airfilter properly serviced = < 1/2 inch layer of dirt on the filter? revmaaatin.> > I have a strange problem...
