nklr: wells fargo bank --> credit union
I'm glad you didn't get nickled-and-dimed. For anyone else that cannot meet any sort of criteria to waive your banking fees, consider a credit union.
I've been part of my credit union since birth by virtue of my parents' membership. However, you should be able to find one near you that will accept you unless you're W.C. Fields.
They also want your business and geared to serve members not shareholders. They've been reaping in the customers with the public's dissolution with the crap big banks have been throwing at them.
What do I get with a credit union? I don't get nickled-and-dimed with idiotic fees. Simple, easy to use, Internet banking (no fees). Awesome customer service.
Great rates on credit cards and loans. Free use of other credit unions' ATMs. Free use of the ATMs of some other commercial banks.
Here's a list of my credit union's rates/fees for checking accounts and compare yours to see if makes financial sense.
Monthly Maintenance Fee: $0.00
Checking acct fees/requirements: $100.00 min balance
Dividend APY (as of 03 Apr): 0.10%
Bill Pay: $3.95/mo for as many as you like
Foreign ATM use: Free for 10 times per month (VERY useful for me)
Overdraft: $25
Acct xfer to cover overdraft: $2.00 per incident
I don't work for a credit union, but my experience and the anecdotal experience of other credit union members has been simple and drama-free.
That being said, not all credit unions are stellar and they may not meet your financial or functional needs. However, if you're fed up with you current bank, ask around about a good credit union.

List,
Yeah,
This is way over the top NKLR, but if you do business at Wells Fargo Bank, it may save you $180/year in fees.
I share this as MY personal experience...

Have direct deposit, Use your atm X many times a month AND the debit card X many times a month AND except Email statements AND....

My CU started changing about the time they got there 5th branch.

Federal LAW teachers can NOT have a "UNION", instead THEY HAVE AN "ASSOSIATION".

Mark,
Thinking back about my comments, yes I'd agree with your sentiments and revise my own.
Go for a smaller bank/credit union if it meets your requirements. They have less "overhead".
(Although they may get bought by a big bank in the future).
Just to be clear, I am recounting my experience with my credit union.
I've have nothing but joy and simplicity in my 30 years of dealing with them.
As for folks in the top making the big bucks, my father was on the board of that credit union. Board members received no pay for the positions. It was on your own time.
Not all banks are too big to fail and not all credit unions are run with the best intentions....
