strange surging issue?

gear on a trip

Besides riding a KLR, I like to get out and hike/backpack for relaxation. I'm not one of those super light everything guys. I have converted my tents to aluminum poles and either of my sleeping bags (winter and warm weather) weigh in around 4lbs each. Figure in cook things,water, food, tools + clothes and a roll of quarters for laundry on the road and I could easily pack near or less on a bike ride than what I do when I'm the one carrying things. Throw in a better camera, rain gear for riding and a few odds and ends I wouldn't normally take hiking - like a bottle of oil, chain lube, etc... and I still wouldn't have 60 pounds loaded on the KLR. Just the same, I ordered a subframe bolt kit from Eagle Mike last night and look forward to my next project. =) BTW, from experience out there, do I have to remove the SW-Motech crash bars or can I just drill on through the holes in the bars and through the frame? tiia eddie [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Did you select the option for SW Motec bars when you ordered the drill thru bolts? I just did the subframe bolt kit & a couple weeks prior to that installed the SW Motech crash bars. So when I was looking for instructions on how the subframe bolt kit is installed, I found basically 2 techniques...... one was to remove one side, upper bolt, then drill thru the crashbar mounting tab, the rear subframe & 1/2 way into the front subframe.... then just leave the drill bit in there. Then remove the other side upper subframe bolt & drill the other 1/2 way using a 2nd drill bit. I wasn't so confident I could do this without ending up with some oblong holes in the crashbar mounting tabs or rear subframe holes. When the subframe bolt kit arrived, EM's instructions pretty clearly said to lift the bike, remove both upper bolts, lower the rear wheel far enough to separate the subframe connectors from each other, then drill each section independantly. I figured if I was going to do this method, the crashbars should be removed. In the end, this is the method I used. Pretty big mess in doing this install too so have a shop vac &/or magnets handy to pick up all the shavings. Not to mention some shop rags to cover the carb/air box. I took several breaks, probably hit it in 4 or 5 sessions. Took probably 3 or 4 hrs to do it all, including the drilling & removing/reinstalling the crashbars.
