water pump question

Post by Jeff Jones » Wed Jul 20, 2005 9:29 pm

Howdy listers, My 2001 KLR has started to drip coolant from right under the water pump. There's a small hole there that my 49 year old eyes can't tell if it's factory or not. My neighbor the mechanic said most motor water pumps have a weep hole for when the pump is shot so the coolant that seeps where its not supposed to go has an exit. Is that the case with the KLR? If it is, I need a new water pump. What's a water pump cost? Thanks in advance, Jeff Jones

Thanks in advance, Jeff Jones What you will need is just a new seal that is quite inexpensive and not difficult to install if you have a little mechanical ability and a shop manual for a guide. Jeff, I doubt you need a complete water pump like you'd do on a car. The seals on the KLR pump are replacement items. Probably a good idea to take a look at the Clymer's manual and see what's involved. It's really pretty simple if you're kind of handy and willing to think your way through the issue. It has oil and coolant seals and a thrust washer and o-ring or two as I recall. This would be a good time to clean your oil pump pick up screen too since you be about a dozen bolts from inside the case. Make sure you get new gaskets if you want to be done in one day. If you're careful the gaskets may be fine but tear one and you'll probably have to wait a week to get one. Or you could have a tube of liquid gasket in the toolbox just in case one tears. Just make sure its high temp type.. Dooden A15 Green Ape

Sounds like the mechanical seal is shot. No big deal (as long as you don't snap off the impeller). The manual has info on it. The Clymer manual may even give more detail. Criswell

Go to the site below and read up on the procedure, print it and keep it beside you when you do the job. Follow it step by step. The most work is putting together the home made tools. I would replace the mechanical seal, oil seal and o-ring, you should pick up a gasket, odds are you won't need it, unless you don't have a new one. Use a very small amount of Hylomar gasket dressing and you'll be able to use that or any other gasket over and over. http://www.klr650.marknet.us/wpump.html Fred has the parts you need. http://www.angelfire.com/ut/moab/parts_frames.html --- Jeff Jones wrote:

Quick question. Today I noticed a puddle of water under my bike (2004 A18), and traced it back to the weep hole under the water pump. Can the water pump seal be replaced without taking the whole side cover off? I looked through my factory service manuals, but it didn't seem clear. Thanks in advance, Darren Clark 2004 KLR-650 A18. <><><><><><> <><><><><><> Darren, In my Clymer's manual it's covered in chapter 10 at the very end under Mechanical and Oil Seal Replacement. The seals are in the cover and the impeller. It'll be best to remove the cover. At the same time you can clean the oil pick up screen. Thanks, You just answered my, should I pull the engine question...... I have several other things I've been wanting to do, and it'll be easier to have the engine on a table for it.
