I need a ramp(s) to load/unload my ATV and small to mid-size dirt bikes in a 1 ton pick up, and sometimes use it for the KLR. The tailgate height is approximately 39" with the truck unloaded, so what about ramp length? - I assume I need at least the 80 to 90" length?. Also, I know there are bi-fold, tri-fold, narrow single ramps, etc., rung spacing vs. smoother surface? I like the idea of being able to store the single folding ramps inside the truck to help prevent theft. I would also like to be able to use the ramp for my KLR, but while alone can I (or do you?) ride the KLR up a single wide 12" ramp into the truck bed? I guess the folding would work better for that but then you can't store that style in the truck, right? - can you clamp two single wides together? Help! Bill

Bill, I have a single tri-fold ramp which has a strap with hook to retain the tip of the ramp on the tailgate. I use a venerable milk carton to step on but would highly suggest a second ramp to walk up. I do not try to ride up. To old for the possibilities there. I walk the bike up under power using the milk carton as a step to get myself up into the truck. Since you are also loading ATVs, a second ramp is in your picture already. It's a precarious effort at best without trying to ride up a ramp that can rock and slip. This Harbor Freight ramp is 69 inches long x 45 inches wide. It is a tri-fold ramp that fits into your truck bed when folded. I have used it to load my KLR. it is wide enough to walk beside the bike easily. It can be bought with a coupon for $60. If your truck bed is 8' long, then why not use ramps that long? It just so happens that lumber pre-cut to that length is readily available. I used 2x10s. A couple of steel ramp ends and some of some expanded metal traction pads made them work quite well. Lumber and all hardware came to less than $50. Walk up one ramp, power or push the bike up the other. A track stand or milk crate to step up on works as well as the second ramp. As Criswell suggests, the terrain can be your friend; don't make the climb any steeper than it has to be. Also bear in mind that these bikes are not all that heavy. Two guys can put a lot of bikes into a pickup without ramps. I would rule out Harleys and Gold Wings, and Guzzis can be troublesome, but just about anything under 500 lb is feasible. Are we not men?

and then there is this 'alternative' method. When I was younger, and had superior balance, I use to ride any =dirtbike motorcylce into the back of the pickup truck using a 2x10. Worked great for my little motorcycle brokerage.... Rode the bikes out the same way; got the back wheel on the board and used my 'balance skills' to ride the bike down the board backwards. sigh. then there was this CB450 Honda. I was loading this bike and was on my way to deliver it. Shouldn't be a problem. I think I had loaded/unloaded it at least 2x. Started just fine, idled fine, Pointed it at the board and gave it the gas. You know, enough throttle to over come gravity. Funny thing, it liked the new throttle position, a lot. Fortunately, the ensuing wheelie just missed the back glass and I was able to save the gas tank from damage with my knee as the bike hog-piled me on the edge of the truck. Somebody, please hit the kill switch. No, don't. That way they can't hear me screaming in pain. That might have been the last non-dirt bike I ever loaded like THAT. 35+ years later, my college dorm buddies still laugh about it. and no, alcohol was not involved. thank you very much. My Concours gets kinda scerrrry loading it (if I have to take somewhere for a service issue - 600 pounds). I met a Harley guy in Big Bend once loading his big Hawg on a big trailer with a wooden bed and no wheel chock thingy's. He was putting it right in the center. I didn't have the heart to tell him it weren't gonna work as the first little bump or railroad track was going to severely impede his loading work. And...I have never been successful telling a Harley guy anything. I had my Yamaha IT fall out of my bed (err...pickup) once as I didn't secure it very well and the jump out put some macho scars on it. My old Hodaka's rear wheel fell out of one of those bumper racks after hitting a dip at speed. You couldn't hurt a Hodaka (heh). Experience is everything. How do all those Harley's get into the pickup beds at Bikeweek? I used to use the 2 X 10's like Jud until I got rich. They kinda suck if it is muddy and rainey. I knew a guy once who tried to ride his brand new Bultaco into the bed of his truck. Hummm.....he forgot.....to turn the gas on. Halfway up...it quit.....and he fell over. For all you old guys, you remember Bultacos had fiberglass fuel tanks. Dang.....the get off put a hole in his brand new fuel tank. He was fun to watch, he was always doing fun stuff like that. Only guy I ever knew who actually threw a rod through the bottom of the engine of one of his 2 stroke bikes probably using a mystery oil in his premix. I think he went to model airplanes after that. I have the Harbor Freight steel tri-folds. I got them on sale & they were out of stock so I got the displays. Two for $50! They fit between the tail gate and the wheel wells, one on either side. I have anchors from Tractor Supply bolted at each corner of the bed. The tri-folds come with a chain that you can hook to something to prevent the ramps from falling when in use. I use small padlocks on the chains to prevent theft. Mech
