motorcycle/atv ramps

Post by billshel2003 » Tue Mar 13, 2012 3:34 pm

Thanks to all that have replied to this post, I appreciate your input. I don't know anyone using ramps so I'm trying to figure it out on my own. I did a lot of looking on the net, too. With my tailgate so high at around 39" - the truck being a 1 ton - I think I need longer ramps, 8 ft. I can't always count on finding a low spot to get the rear wheels into. I'll probably use the ramps most often for the ATV, which weighs over 500 lbs, I believe, and then with me, gear, etc., I don't trust using 2x framing lumber for ramps. I think I settled on getting 2 single Black Widow extra wide ramps on the Discount Ramps site which are 17" wide and 8 ft long, and they fold in half. Or, AllRamps site has UTV 8 ft by 17" wide ramps, folding. Both aluminum. Both are not terribly pricey for what you get. I can separate the ramps for the ATV wheel spacing, and use them for the bikes by walking up/down one with the bike on the other - plenty wide enough to slowly feather the throttle and use front brake to keep things under control - in theory... Thanks again, Bill

The tailgate height is approximately 39" with the truck unloaded, so what about ramp length? - I assume I need at least the 80 to 90" length?. Also, I know there are bi-fold, tri-fold, narrow single ramps, etc., rung spacing vs. smoother surface? I like the idea of being able to store the single folding ramps inside the truck to help prevent theft. I would also like to be able to use the ramp for my KLR, but while alone can I (or do you?) ride the KLR up a single wide 12" ramp into the truck bed? I guess the folding would work better for that but then you can't store that style in the truck, right? - can you clamp two single wides together? Help! > > Bill >
