nikon camera - "adventure camera" - nklr

OK, we have "Adventure Bikes" why not an "Adventure Camera?" I saw an ad for a Nikon Cool Pix AW100 camera that I think is interesting. The camera is waterproof (up the 33 ft), it is freeze-proof, shockproof, takes photos and HD video, and get this, it has a built in GPS. I gather that when you take a photo, it tags (a GPS fix of) the location where the photo was taken. I know that many cell phones can do most of that, but, they are usually not waterproof, freeze-proof, or shockproof. Get this, the camera can be used as a weapon! If a bear sneaks up on you, flash him with the built in flash, kick him in the nads, then run. OK, I made that last part up. I wonder if any of you who are photographers or techno-geeps have an info on this camera? Eddie P.S. I am in no way related to Nikon, I put all my retirement money into Eastman Kodak Stocks.

Interesting, do you think it could be used as an alternate to the Go Pro type video cameras? Sorry to hear about your retirement Eddie, I hear Wally World pays well for just standing there and saying "Welcome to Wal Mart"... ________________________________ From: eddie To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, January 30, 2012 12:10 PM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Nikon Camera - "Adventure Camera" - NKLR OK, we have "Adventure Bikes" why not an "Adventure Camera?" Check out the Casio Commando..... waterproof (up to 3 meters), freezeproof, shockproof Droid cell phone with still & video camera. Plus it has your built in flashlight. We have a few of them in our company & they are pretty tough. I have mine mounted on the handlebars of the KLR. - Bill _____ From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of eddie Sent: Monday, January 30, 2012 10:11 AM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Nikon Camera - "Adventure Camera" - NKLR OK, we have "Adventure Bikes" why not an "Adventure Camera?" Those Casio's are nice. My Android (HTC Inspire) is in an Otter Box, which isn't waterproof. Off topic, but have you seen the Dual Sport Maps App for Android phones? It's pretty cool for only $20. http://www.dualsportmaps.com/%c2%a0 -David ________________________________ From: Bill Kinnison To: 'eddie' ; DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, January 30, 2012 1:25 PM Subject: RE: [DSN_KLR650] Nikon Camera - "Adventure Camera" - NKLR Check out the Casio Commando..... waterproof (up to 3 meters), freezeproof, shockproof Droid cell phone with still & video camera. Is a pissed off, blind bear any safer? They say the senses compensate when one is lost, so won't his sense of smell be improved? And let's not forget the sense of smell is linked to the sense of taste... ________________________________ From: eddie mauri To: David Nichols Sent: Monday, January 30, 2012 2:11 PM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Nikon Camera - "Adventure Camera" - NKLR Have not seen the Dual Sport Maps or the Casio, but, and a flash you say.....? Bears don't stand a chance. Will check it out. Thanks. Those bags look to be a good deal! I've had good luck adapting bags for use as panniers using hardware from Ortlieb http://www.ortliebusa.com/cartgenie/prodInfo.asp?pid=126&cid=2 The Ortlieb QL hardware is what they use for their bicycle panniers. They are just the right size to use with the KLR side racks that you see on ebay, or you can make something up yourself. They secure the top of your bag to the side rack, then you can readily wok up a way to secure the bag to the side or bottom of the rack to prevent flopping. Lifting the carry handle (attached to the hardware) releases the brackets and the bag lifts right off. No need for straps across the seat, and each bag can be mounted or removed individually. -- Kevin Powers White Bear Lake, MN [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I am not where I can check the info for the camera but go to www.dpreview.com. They likely have done a write up on it. They also have camera specific forums that may shed some light on the issue. These type cameras have been around for a couple years but the GPS deal is cool!!! I trust dpreview a lot. I used them when I got my Canon 60D last year when I was comparing different cameras. Micah
