Makes me wish you could buy the modern version of a Bultaco Alpina, with
full road license. I'm afraid most modern dirt/dual purpose bikes are
designed to traverse the terrain at warp speed instead of taking your
time and playing on the terrain. The trials bikes of long ago not only
had to go over obstacles but had to do travel sections to the next
obstacle, they even had small seats.

I could not agree more. I am so tired of big expensive street bikes being masqueraded as an adventure bike or all terrain bike which is a joke unless you are a gorilla. Try pulling that Yamaha Tenerife out of a mudhole, gravel pit, sand pit or take it up a rocky steep hill. I actually saw a guy recently on the new Triumph...what is it, the Tiger riding with a pack of KLR guys in Big Bend National Park. He went everywhere the KLR's went including the dirt / gravel River Road. I have done that 3 or 4 times on the KLR and it is no big deal, but the western part has a lot of deep gravel and rocks which I don't particularly enjoy on the KLR. I would prefur to be on a bike that weighs about 230 or 250 pounds...and on a 2 stroke that got good milage. You can wish can't you? Big fat bikes with a high front fender,....I would rather stick needles in my eyes than ride one through challenging back country. Jest my opinion.
Reminds me of a hill climb I went too long ago. It wasn't a particularly high hill, maybe 200 feet with a nasty hump right in the middle about midway. This hump seperated the hill climbers from the wanna be's. Guys were taking their pretty street bikes all chromey and shiney up this thing. Triumph Bonneville 650's, BSA's and Harley Sportsters. The hump would usually make them do an endo right down on the headlight, bars, triple clamps etc. It wasn't pretty. And there were special tricked out hill climber type bikes with trick frames, tractor tires, big engines. The only guy that made it up that hill that day was a 250 Ossa. Probably played with his sprocket gearing and had just the right combo.
I used to know a guy who competed in hill climbs and he always did better on his 100 cc Hodaka than his 450 Honda both of which were set up for hill climbing. He was Texas State champ in 100 cc.

I had a KDX200 that was fun...I have even seen them
street legalized.

Wish I still had my KDX400. Rode it for 19 years, plated. It never left me
stranded for any reason. Loved the low end torque and log jumping
capabilities. My son hated me when we played "follow the leader".

Reminds me, the best time riding in the dirt was on a small RM125, it
was light, fast and crashable!
I had other bigger bikes when I was younger as then going fast and power
was the thought but
had the RM when I was 50 years old and loved looking around and taking
my time trail riding!
