cheng shin 858 tires. where to buy?

Post by david.r.nichols@sbcglobal.net » Tue Dec 13, 2011 10:56 am

I'm about to buy new tires, and the Cheng Shin 858's are one of my choices (cheap, pretty good reviews). I cannot find them for sale anywhere. I used Google and looked at the usual places (BikeBandit, Chapparral, etc.). They all seem to be either out of stock or don't even have these tires listed. Have these tires been discontinued? Any thoughts? To prevent a tire opinion thread, yes I'm aware of all the other choices and I've also read the helpful KLR650 motorcycle tire comments at: http://www.standoutnet.com/extras/mike/motorcycles/klr650/tires/. So, all I'm asking is: Has anyone recently purchased these Cheng Shin tires? If so, where?

cheng shin 858 tires. where to buy?

Recently, no. However, I recently replaced a set of C-858s on my KLR. The only complaint I have (had) was that, especially when new, the rear tire followed grooves on the road like a slot car. It was unnerving at first, but I got used to it because it wasn't unstable, although it felt like it was. They handled well, would slide more quickly than most, but it was a predicable slide - they just gradually slipped when you were cornering hard. The rear tire got pretty noisy as it wore down to replacement time. I don't think Cheng Shin makes them any more. I have Kenda K-270s on both KLRs now and am pretty happy with them, but in loose dirt and mud, the C-858 was better. Mike

I heard some time ago the 858s were no longer made. The Superstore link would seem to confirm that. If they can still be had, that would be great news. I can't think of a single german tire I would take over an 858.

skid plate question.

You will get an extra peice with the 2008 skid plate that will not fit anywhere. You already have a bracket on the front of the frame on the 2007 that the 2008 does not have. Bin the little block of aluminum and it will bolt right on
