Largely, It is a functin of OAT. Higher OAT and residual engine heat will exacerbate the rate of evap. It seemed to me the OEM battery required adding distilled water more often; the Walmart replacement not as often. What is not 'constant' is the conditions where the battery spent its life (as I have moved 3 times during the battery life and have rode in places with extreme temp shifts. = -40(cold storage) to +117F. yeah, that is hot. rev's rule of thumb. at a mininimum: Check the water level everytime you change the oil. If riding in temps above 90 and certainly above 100F, you should check more often. Higher temps, I check every 1000 miles. When the battery is new, I index the min/max lines on the battery with a 'sharpie' all the way around it so I can easily see the levels. I went 5K last summer and never added any water to one KLR. Two years ago, 2 KLR's rode 2427miles in 12 days no water added before, during or after the trip. Temps on several days above 105F. Fluid levels are absolutely necessary on a lead acid battery for battery longivity. The last three lead acid batteries I changed in the KLR's ALL lasted 4.5 years. Everyone of them. The last KLR I bought had a two year old batery w/low fluid on inital inspection and 'low and behold' it failed almost immediatly which I would attribute to poor PO maint. shrug. Don't taze me man-- yeah, yeah, yeah, if it is glass mat, etal, you don't have to check fluids. However: You will also be like the recent poster: started good, started good, started slow, then battery FAIL. shrug. Just know your limitations. smile. check the battery voltage once a month after 2 years to give you peace of mind about your battery health. Full charge = 12.6V+ (2.1v/cell) Anything less and your battery is telling you it needs a top off or if it is old, it is going 'South' sooon. revmaaatin.

My choke cable has gone bad. A mechanic said that a better replacement is a plunger that attaches to the carb where the choke cable attaches. Instead of a choke lever at the handlebar, I'd have a plunger on the carb. News to me? I am no mechanic. Any of you all have some spin on this mod? Is it common? Don't remember reading about it here. Well, at least this ain't an oil, or chain lube question! EddieM

there are 10 ways to do everything I prefer it on the handlebars--you could take this as an opportunity to do the better set up so the lever doesnt get whacked when you fall on the left side IMHO
