Hi ken I put a Schnitz racing 685 kit in my 2008 KLR at only 6000 Kms because of an oil burning issue and have not had any issue since with almost 40,000 Kms ... you can do the math. All you will really need is a quality bore job for your cylinder, oil, filter, cooland and spark plug if you wish. Man o' man..... I thought J#3 had this wrapped upped sensibly suggesting that AGM batteries were by far the best choice.Then Jeff#1 suggests the need for regular maintenance and how little work keeping up on your battery is and that sounds very reasonable.I feel like I'm listening to a couple of guys who both know more than me and just sitting there going "Yup - that makes a lot a sense... yup."I think J#1 needs to start housing motorcycles for a fee and doing regular upkeep. That's what I think.

If you don't take the seat and side covers off regularly how are you going to check some of the fasteners below/behind them? Seems to me you should check battery connections every once in a while if you want reliable electrickery. Adding battery check to the maintenance list while changing oil probably only adds 10 minutes if that. Routine maintenance is a part of reliable bike ownership. It doesn't take much time if you do it regularly. Also helps identify little issues before they become big issues.
