Hello KLR'ista's!
I'd like to pick your brain for the possible reason of a rattling noise which seems to be coming from the top end, maybe more pronounced on the left hand side.
I know, this is where the timing chain runs and I checked its tension as well as the balancer chain tension. All looks good.
I think it started roughly 3 months ago, around or after the time of my last oil change. I put in some cheap no-name stuff I had flying around the garage. Could that be the reason?
(Of course, I don't want to kick off another oil thread here)
Other than that, when I unbuttoned it about a month ago I checked the valve clearances and they were all perfect, just like two years ago when I last checked.
So what else could cause a rattling noise? I even recorded it the other day with my iphone but haven't been able to find the "voice memo" file on my PC after syncing it...
When the engine is idle one cannot hear it, it's also less pronounced during acceleration, I think. But while cruising at around 2000 - 3000 rpm it's pretty obvious that it doesn't sound as good as it used to.
Simple answer?
Cheers,
heinz
BTW, it's an 03 model with 40.000 km on the clock.

doohickey loaner tools
Only thing left that I was missing was the:
Craftsman 1/2 in. Drive Torque Wrench from father's estate items. 10 - 150 lb/ft. Craftsman Item #9-44641.
Used but in good condition. Father maintained tools very well, and was a mechanic. I am not familiar with this item, so please ask any questions you may have prior to bidding. No returns or exchanges on this item due to size, weight and shipping.
EBAY $7.50 BUT DOUBLE THAT WITH SHIPPING. USED
Still this will replace the Harbor freight POS 3/8 drive ft/lb that I messed up trying to torque at 85 lbs which was 5 ft/lb within limit.
