It's a jungle out there. A dump truck driver killed my daughter and
grand-daughter in August, in Charlotte. He came across 2 lanes and hit them
head-on. One of the four excuses he gave was that he blacked out. A month
after that, he still had a valid CDL to drive heavy rigs on public roads.

Holy shit... that's awful. I don't know you, but I'm so sorry for your loss.
I've been spending a lot of time down in Charlotte over the past two
years. Stories like these definitely raise my level of alertness.
I'll be going back down there again in March and/or April.

Ditto. Terribly sorry to hear about anyone's loss of such magnitude.

Wow, Chris, words can't express how bad that has been to deal with. My condolences to you and your family.

I have long thought that killing someone while drunk driving should
solicite a murder charge since the person driving made the choice
knowingly to do something that could cause him to kill someone.. It is
like pointing a gun at someone and having it go off accidently. You
still pointed the gun at them, so you killed them.
People in this country need to accept that just because they drink
themselves doesnt mean drinking and driving isn't a major crime. The
sooner the courts start prosecuting drunk drivers for the criminals they
are the sooner we can stop hearing so many tragic stories like this one.
Sorry, soap box mode = off now

Ohhh... that sounds eerily familiar to my own situation. I'm up to 7 or 8 or 9 (depending on how you count them) bikes and I've received an almost identical speech from my wife. .....the garage floor isn't too bad if you have an air mattress. Thanks Chris. Yes, I agree. It should be at least criminal negligence to
kill someone with a car/truck. A trial and a guilty/not-guilty verdict are
still important -- but it's hard not to think the defendant should not be
driving during that time --- for all our safety.

Thank you all for your thoughts and condolences. Yes, I'm definitely in a
"life sucks" stage.
It has affected my driving and riding a lot. The dumptruck hit my daughter's
car so hard the car was knocked backwards 87 feet from the point of initial
impact. That's an image that stays with you.
It's clear too many people don't take driving seriously. I call it the
"video game" mentality -- just push Reset and everything's okay.
Every month more people die in road wrecks than died in the 9/11 attacks. I
hope that at some point, the tide will turn against killing while driving --
like the tide turned against drinking and driving. Drinking used to be an
excuse "oh, he was drunk, not his fault" but now it's clearly accepted as
the drinker's fault.
Regards,
Chris
