Holy smokes! (pun intended) 140 miles per gallon, with a (?) nearly 7 gallon tank! You could damn near bang out a Saddlesore 1000 on one tank of fuel! Nate in N.E.

Did you catch the camo seat cover on the one photo? The rear sprocket looks pretty big and I like the handguard/bar protector setup on the camo seat bike. --Jim

Yep, would be the only motorcycle I can think of capable of easily exceeding the 350mi. stop rule with NO aftermarket fuel cell added. SBL IBA #9464

140 MPG is pretty amazing, would be a great commuter. You could easily get by with a 2.5 gal tank (350 miles!) and use the extra space for storage. something like the F650 CS, only a lot better looking. Karl A14

YES you have almost defined the perfect commuter, a 140mpg KLR, just lower the susp and seat if it's not going offroad, also high-mileage street tires and belt drive like the CS to cut down on maintenance. AND keep the price ~$5K. Perfect! Only problem is, most commuters don't want the ideal commuter vehicle, they'd as soon drive a Ford Excursion to work even on a beautiful day. Such is our society here in the US anyway. Else Kaw would have surely marketed a commuter- version street KLR (even if not a 140mpg diesel) because it would be such an easy bike to build off the existing dual-purpose version.

Unless BigK buys the rights to the engine design from HDT, you'll never see this bike at a dealer. I seem to remember someone telling me that the engine itself cost $6,000 to make. Then again that might be figuring in the cost of design, military certification and of the KLR engine they cannabilize for the transmission and the electricial system (c'est toute, nothing else is used from the gas motor). If K was smart they'd buy the design and start cranking them out. You figure that even for $7,000 you'd have every single IronButter putting down a deposit on one. Actually what would happen is that you wouldn't be able to buy the bike in most states (like CA) because of emissions. But you'd still be able to buy a 12mpg Excursion or a forkin' Hummer H2. This country amuses me to no end. Z DC

Would anyone really be happy commuting on a 24 horsepower bike? Most 250s would out perform this diesel bike. The military has two good reasons for wanting a diesel bike, fuel handling and the effects of a tracer round hitting a gas tank. Gasoline is much more available where I ride, and I hope nobody is shooting at me. The diesel bike would most likely cost over 10,000 dollars. You can buy a lot of gas for the price difference. So, if fuel mileage is a big deal to you, get a 250 with a big tank and ride slower. That 120 MPG was most likely done at low speeds. In the past, the military has had some fairly worthless vehicles. Remember the Gamagoat? It's fun to talk about it, and explore the possibilities. Maybe in the future there will be fantastic fuel mileage vehicles, but for now, the diesel bike is a stepping stone. Actually what would happen is that you wouldn't be able to buy the bike in most states (like CA) because of emissions. diesels are not emissions tested in ca ds
