spoke question.
On the front wheel for my 1997 KLR, how many different spokes are used to build it? If you look at the OEM parts fiche on Ron Ayers they are listing 4 spoke part numbers: 41029, 41029A, 41029D and 41029E (see link below). BikeBandit lists only 41029 and 41029A (see link below). I have a wheel that is assembled and a replacement rim (mine's cracked) with a full set of spokes and they all look the same to me. Also, can you reuse spokes? My wheel builder is telling me they stretch and may need replacing.

You have 36 spokes on your front wheel. Spokes can be reused if they are not rusted to the nipples. The numbers you have listed are Reference Numbers and not Part Numbers. Why not go to the source and try Kawasaki s parts diagrams? Kawasaki reference numbers are usually a five digit number and the actual part number will be a five digit number with a four digit number.

Kawasaki lists the nipples separate and the part no. is 41032-1054. The spokes are listed for the left side at 41029-1165 and the right side as 41029-1166. You ll need 18 each and 36 nipples.
Building a wheel isn t rocket science. Why not do it yourself? You can true the wheel on your forks. If you need pointers, just let me know.

I never built a wheel, but just on general principles, buy some spares.
Related question: My spokes are corroded and the creams, lotions and jellies I've tried don't touch it. If I use emery cloth on them, will I damage any coating or finish that might be on them? Thanks- JWF

Corroded?
Depends on how heavily. But, when it's "just" your wheel's structural
integrity we're dealing with,
my vote is for a new set of spokes. Sorta like, "This parachute patch ought
to hold."

Thanks Fred, I've lost confidence in this guy since he told me I needed to buy spokes because they stretch. I have two sets and I'm sure that between them I'll have enough good spokes. And thanks for the offer of support, I am now going to try to build a wheel. That will save me $80+...
I was going to have him adjust my valves also, but now I'm thinking I will do that also.

The new spokes and nipples would cost $143 for the OEM parts, I'd think stainless ones would be pricier...
I bought the entire bike for $400, the rim used for $40, so I really can't see spending that much for spokes when I can see they aren't corroded.
After I stripped the bike down it looks very clean. I don't think it's ever been off road.

I ve never seen a spoked wheel come apart even when the spokes were super rusty.
That said, if you re going to rebuild the wheel with a new rim anyway why not throw in some new stainless steel spokes?
Very Respectfully,

Kind of looks "cool" all stripped down like that. Goes to show how much the plastic, seat, and tank bulk it up. Gives me ideas.

eBay item No. 130577853704 is a set of KLR spokes, both wheels. Don't know anything except that, and the sale ends in 26 mnutes. Sorry I didn't see it sooner. -JWF

I have seen top end drills (powered) where you can clearly see the
cord has been cut but the listing indicates works fine! People would
sell their sweat on EBay if someone bid on it!

Hey David- If you're still looking, there's these people for SS spokes. I haven't dealt with them other than to email a question and get a prompt, polite but not helpful answer about what shade of yellow the steel nipples are. The least expensive spokes for KLRs are $70 per wheel, with your choice of alloy nipples or the "yellow zinc plated steel" ones. Shipping seems to be free. Extra bucks for oversize spokes, colored spokes, etc. And they have trick looking hubs, and full wheel assemblies. If you buy anything, let us know how it goes. -JWF
