I've been thinking my bike runs hot and in conjunction w/ packing for my first trip I've been taking it out and running it on the interstate. First I had a problem with the vacuum line collapsing and I fixed that, but in the back of my mind I kept thinking there must be a reason for the bike getting hot enough to cause the line to collaspe. Well this morning I finally got a chance to load up the bike and take it for a test run up the pass and sure enough w/ the bike fully loaded for the first time it overheated.
I took it back home and pulled out the repair book and started going down the troubleshooting list for overheating item by item until I got to the clogged crankcase strainer. I posted a couple of pictures in the photos section so you can see what I found. I was amazed that it could run at all.
I'm not a mechanic so I've got about 5 hours into it already and will have about another 2 hours tomorrow but I think I've got the problem solved.
I bought the bike used and it has had a running hot problem for me from day one. It's got 25,000 miles on it, only a few hundred of that are mine. I'm thinking it's been limping along like this the whole time. I'm looking forward to seeing it perform at it's full capablity:)
get well soon!

I think so, it feels rubbery like a silicone so maybe a spray-a-gasket? The black chunks are probably pieces of grommets or similar parts and I didn't get a chance to photograph a piece of cast iron, about a 3/8" curve that might have been part of a gear hub and a hooked peice of wire that might have been a part of a spring.
It's been running okay w/ them laying in the bottom of the engine so I'm thinking/hoping it will continue to do so.
I'll let you know after I test ride it.
Some days my first trip looks very far away:)

Tim,
I am a member of the DSN KLR 650 list and I heard about your accident.
I wish you a speedy recovery.
Chin up! No, wait, that isn't right, is it?

Thanks Vermonster, I looked up the information about a doohickey/balancer and indeed the chunks are a match.
I just finished a 100 mile trip from Colorado Springs to Wilkerson Pass and back, hot dry and windy up and rain, wind and lighting back. I was going to post-and-boast how well my bike is running from the strainer cleaning project when I ran across your reply. Lucky me, my chain didn't jump and I already had the diagnosis and solution to my problem waiting for me when I got home.
I'm gett'n one on order and parking the bike for a few days while I wait for the part to get here and I install it.
Wow, am I'm glad you guys are so free w/ your knowledge:)
Rick
