Recently, about 6 weeks ago I put a message out to the group to see if anybody had any used street tires to donate or sell at a cheap price.I had a group of 3 (Harley bagger,Concourse & another KLR) friends that were all interested in gaining membership to the Iron Butt association. The group prides themselves on being "The world's toughest riders" so I figured that this would be a worthy challenge.I entered "KLR sprockets" into google search and found a 16/40 sprocket combo that made a HUGE difference for what I was doing here.Roughly 500 rpm difference (lower) from stock in 5th gear almost seemed like the 6th gear that they forgot to put in at the factory.Well, other than a new Kenda K270 coming apart on me (thanks Westark Yamaha In Ft.Smith,AR for the KLR Oem Take-off) and a bearing going bad in the wheel.....it was a success!! 23hrs.& 30min. later! 1,029 miles. The documentation of the ride at every gas station...getting start/finish witness/odometer readings, etc. proved to be a challenge within itself. After the ride I mailed in all paperwork as required and then last week it came in the mail.My acceptance package from IBA.Surprisingly to me the official # of KLR's to have done this is VERY low.If YOU have ever considered this....you should do it.It was an experience of a lifetime.

outcome of saddle sore 10000 - iba certification.
Congratulations Terry!
I've been considering doing this myself for a while.
However, I will NOT be doing it on the KLR. I absolutely love my KLR for many reasons and it can do nearly anything... but it's not the best choice of bike if you're trying to cover long distances in short periods of time. I've done a couple of 12-hour days in the saddle of my KLR and even with forethought and preparation It gave me a wicked case of monkey-butt.

Good suggestion, I'll check the mounting bolts and stops. I didn't really
think the tires were larger!

Your center stand has probably gone over center enough to let the tire back
down some. I d suggest that maybe the center stand has shifted or the bump
stop has been bent slightly from putting your bike up on the center stand.
What brand of center stand do you have? The footpeg bolts may be loose. If
they are tight, you may loosen the footpeg bolts and rotate the centerstand
mount towards the rear and then retighten the bolts. This will help
temporarily until the center stand hits the bump stop hard enough and you ll
be right where you are now.
I don t think the Gripster has changed size.

Hi All,
I recently had my 02 up on the center stand to install a new pair
of tire that are labeled the same as those coming off the wheels. I
swapped the rear first as I was installing new cogs and chain. After
installing the front tire on the rim I could not get the axle to slid
thru the hub as it seemed the forks had gotten longer! I got the front
installed but now the when up on the centerstand the tires are both
contacting the same floor that used to allow me to tilt the KLR forward
or to the rear, to unload which ever I needed to turn. I have a Ricor
shock on it with only a few hundred miles and though I adjusted the
chain with the same slack up on the side stand as before, it runs tight,
making me think the shock has somehow gotten taller. It was not that
way when I reeled the old chain off. (I have calibrated the chain slack
loaded and then measured it on the centerstand to find the resting
slack. That way I can adjust it easily on the road.) I also noticed that
the bike leans at a lower angle on the side stand, reinforcing my idea
that something has definitely changed, i.e. the shock is taller. If I
put a 3/8" piece of plywood under the centerstand, I get about the came
tire clearence off the floor as before.
Any thoughts?
Best regards,
Don M
