Hi All,
I recently had my 02 up on the center stand to install a new pair
of tire that are labeled the same as those coming off the wheels. I
swapped the rear first as I was installing new cogs and chain. After
installing the front tire on the rim I could not get the axle to slid
thru the hub as it seemed the forks had gotten longer! I got the front
installed but now the when up on the centerstand the tires are both
contacting the same floor that used to allow me to tilt the KLR forward
or to the rear, to unload which ever I needed to turn. I have a Ricor
shock on it with only a few hundred miles and though I adjusted the
chain with the same slack up on the side stand as before, it runs tight,
making me think the shock has somehow gotten taller. It was not that
way when I reeled the old chain off. (I have calibrated the chain slack
loaded and then measured it on the centerstand to find the resting
slack. That way I can adjust it easily on the road.) I also noticed that
the bike leans at a lower angle on the side stand, reinforcing my idea
that something has definitely changed, i.e. the shock is taller. If I
put a 3/8" piece of plywood under the centerstand, I get about the came
tire clearence off the floor as before.
Any thoughts?
Best regards,
Don M

have avon gripsters gotten larger?
Your center stand has probably gone over center enough to let the tire back down some. I d suggest that maybe the center stand has shifted or the bump stop has been bent slightly from putting your bike up on the center stand. What brand of center stand do you have? The footpeg bolts may be loose. If they are tight, you may loosen the footpeg bolts and rotate the centerstand mount towards the rear and then retighten the bolts. This will help temporarily until the center stand hits the bump stop hard enough and you ll be right where you are now.
I don t think the Gripster has changed size.

have avon gripsters gotten larger?
Just read your post. The tire may not be built any larger. But, it may be
"bigger" if you have increased your tire's pressure.
I had previously noticed the OEM sized Avon Gripster on my 09' KLR650
rubbed the chain guard if I put in much more than about 30psi of air.
The wheel was aligned and the rim is not bent.
I had the bike up on the SW Motech centerstand and was turning the wheel by
hand to clean the chain when I stopped to air up the tire.
Afterward, I had difficulty rotating the wheel to lube the chain it. ????
I checked and found the tire rubbing. So, I let a little air out and
watched the tire "shrink" a bit.
I ended up planing off the outer edges of the knobs on the left side of the
tire with a cheese grater just a tad to help with the clearance issue.
I also make a mental note not to over inflate the tire for highway running.
The recommended pressures are too soft for my 99% street riding.
I have been very happy with the tread wear and handling of 29psi F/ 30psi
