seeking faster warmups

Post by spike55_bmw » Wed Jun 22, 2011 8:41 pm

I have to admit that I didn't spend any time reading the volleys of pros / cons before this one but WOW! To me, the Thermo-Bob controls "over cooling" of the cylinder and head during cool / cold weather riding. As you rightly noted, it does not "expand" the KLR cooling system's ability to dissipate heat in warmer weather. That aspect is no better or worse that the stock system. More air moving through the radiator, around the engine itself, or increasing the radiator size are the only ways to successfully operate in higher temperatures. Regardless of the weather conditions, the Thermo-Bob does get the coolant temp up to a pre-set level and keeps it from falling precipitously, as is the case with the stock setup. It doesn't stop the temps from going higher while sitting at a stop light. Whether or not you feel that a steadier coolant temp, provided by ThermoBob, is a benefit, will prolong engine life, etc is in the eye of the beholder. We will all be older men when that answer might available. I have one. Don R100, A6F
