who waves to who?

Post by Jud » Sat May 28, 2011 7:56 pm

Yah, I remember the raised fist. It's the black power salute. I saw a version of it the other day, from a school bus driver. First he thumped his heart with the thumb end of his fist. then straightened his elbow with his arm up and forward at about 30 degrees, like a heil hitler, but still with a fist. The guy looked like a Mediterranean Neanderthal. Solidarity, bro, All power to the People! On my bike I usually don't think to wave until 2 or 3 riders wave to me. Once I get going, I wave to just about everybody, unless I'm busy, but I then make it a point to get onto a less-traveled road. In the meantime, about 85% of riders wave back. Most harleys, almost all sport bikes, all BMWs, DS riders and Gold Wing riders. I wave to scooters, too; most just look stunned, but a few wave back. Once I had Shelly on the back on the way to Sturgis. She was in a bad mood because she holed a piston on her Suzuki outside of Watertown the day before, which is why we were two up. She got into waving at the mostly-harley oncoming traffic. She gave a little wave, then waved her hand frantically if they didn't wave back. If they still didn't respond, she flipped them off. I guess it took her mind off her bike. It had cost her $225, but I put some nice Pirellis and a set of low bars on it that doubled the cost. We retrieved it from the shop in Watertown the following spring, and ended up giving it to a friend when we could not find pistons. He finally located a set in Australia for about $250, and sold the bike for $500. I guess I'm digressing here, but if I don't my eyes will glaze over at the mention of waving.

The wave has changed over the years, but there have always been those who do and those who do not. I wave anyway. It's a rare pass that I don't wave and is usually because my hand is holding the clutch, I didn't see the bike until it was past (behind another on-coming vehicle), or I can't/won't release the grip at that moment for a safety reason. I get mostly return waves, but there is always a fair number who do not wave or acknowledge me in any fashion. I figure it's their loss, not mine. I'm a rider, and I feel some kinship with anyone else on 2 wheels, obviously that changes sometimes if you get to know some of them, or they prove otherwise, but we are all involved in something that brings us together at some level. In the good old USA I still feel motorcycles are not considered serious transportation or cagers just assume we're crazy daredevils with a deathwish. I feel > that if we don't stick together, watch out for each other on the road, and show some solidarity among our selves no one else is going to. > > Just my 2-cents worth. But while I'm into it let me ask a question. In the 70's when I started riding it was common practice for riders who passed to not just wave but show the raised fist, I always assumed it was a sign of solidarity or "Bikers United" sort of symbol. Maybe that was just in the part of the country I lived in, does anyone remember that? > > Ride safe, and keep riding. > > Tp > Knoville TN > 2009 KLR > 2001 Concours > > From: jgormley123 > To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com > Sent: Saturday, May 28, 2011 8:03 AM > Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Who waves to who? > > > > > I am new klr650 rider and I wondering about waving to other riders.. > > Before I started riding I thought all riders waved to each other.. > but I think there may be more to it... > > If I wave to everyone, it seems like 50% have no response.. > So I need to improve my hit ratio... > > I think maybe I should leave the Harley guys alone. > > Also, I ride with a full face helmet so I think I should leave the guys with no helmet and a t-shirt alone too... > > Are the other guidelines I should be using..? > > > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] >

who waves to who?

I remember my first wave. Gerald Ford was the President. I was riding a Honda down one of California's back roads. I'd only been riding legally for a few weeks. This guy who looked to be like some kind of 1%er raised his fist. I waved back. I still remember the feeling. Suddenly I belonged to some fraternity that I was not entirely familiar with. But he seemed to know me. At least that is the feeling I had at the time. Now I live in Central Oregon, and everyone waves to everyone. People driving trucks and SUVs wave to me on my KLR all the time. It is the norm here. I remember the question coming up in a 1979 issue of Iron Horse magazine. Their response was that they just waved to all the pretty girls...

I essentially wave to everyone as long as I'm not holding the clutch, if I am then I just nod. Around here it's hit 'n' miss but the likelihood of getting a wave is usually inversely proportional to how much they're dressed like a gay pirate. That likelihood also holds true as an accurate predictor of the person who will wimp out on riding at the first sign of cold, rain, wind or distance. -Jeff Khoury From: "Bill" To: "DSN KLR650" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Saturday, May 28, 2011 6:50:29 PM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Who waves to who? Guide to motorcycle waving: http://www.viewfromthecloud.com/2006/08/secret-motorcycle-hand-greetings.html I am totally a #3 wave guy, to just about anything on 2 wheels. I do see a difference in who waves back, depending on if I am riding the Vstom, hog, or vintage Beemer. I just keep on wavin'! -Barron

OK, now what about the leg kick? Graz told me the background, but I have different views. Anybody wanna take a shot at this: A rider passes you and as he pulls away, he kicks his right leg out to the side once or twice. What does that mean? Robert P.
