balancer chain klr

Post by Fred Hink » Fri May 13, 2011 5:25 pm

I believe the counter balancer sprockets were changed in about 1996 to a solid sprocket without the damper springs. Your friend might be able to swap out his for the new model. His engine was making a rattling racket so he removed the flywheel and checked the balancer chain. The chain was out of spec so he is replacing it. He also noticed the gear/ sprocket with the weight on it was very loose on the shaft (that goes through to the other side fro the water pump impeller). He is replacing both the shaft and the gear / weight. The rubber cushion on that gear was starting to tear up. Sobering news for all us high milage KLR's. Criswell=
