side stand/starter lockout bypass

Post by Monty » Sat Apr 23, 2011 3:54 pm

Hey guys, I am working on bypassing the kickstand and neutral safety start switch. I would like to also eliminate the interlock diode unit (just something else to go wrong). According to the KLR FAQ the "running safety" circuits can be bypassed by grounding the red/black wire coming from the CDI unit, but this has not been confirmed. Has anyone done this? I am on a 2009 bike. Thanks! Monty

<><><><><><> <><><><><><> Monty, I've got no experience to speak about on the new bikes but have been told the ignition system is different than the pre 08 models. One example is the older bikes can be started without a battery and the new bikes can't. Hopefully someone can confirm the by pass you are asking about. I'd like to know the answer too. I think I have the conditions properly list below but someone please correct any errors. For the starter, it should only energize when the clutch is pulled in if the transmission is in gear OR when the transmission is in neutral. I don't think it will prohibit operation of the starter if the engine is running but I'm not about to press the starter switch on my KLR to verify. : ) For the ignition, it should only work when the clutch is pulled in when the transmission is in gear when the side stand is down, OR anytime the side stand is up OR when the transmission is in neutral regardless of clutch or side stand position. The diode trio allows the neutral switch, side stand switch and starter circuit relay to connect electrically and not send (backfeed) electricity into the "other" electrically attached circuits. Diodes are like one way electrical valves. Power may move one direction but not the other direction. Many KLR owners disable the side stand switch and clutch switch so the starter will operate in any condition and the engine will operate if the bike is in gear with the side stand down and the clutch out. Removing the diode trio if done properly would allow similar operation eliminating a potential failure point. <><><><><><> <><><><><><> Jamie, I was basing that off the old bikes. But I'd guess it was the same on the new models too. Isn't this a great forum! Would you post the part # and drill size when you have it finished? And...why does Kawasaki do this to us???? Don M -----Original Message----- From: Kevin Sent: Monday, April 25, 2011 9:34 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Thank you, Fred Hink! Just a brief note to thank Fred for a bit of extraordinary service. After disassembling my carb in hopes of getting to the root of some problems, I discovered a tiny hole in the diaphragm. My local dealer wanted $140 for a new one. I called Fred, who quoted an identical price, and explained that part of the cost was because the diaphragm and slider came assembled together. Then he said, "On the other hand, you may want to call your Harley dealer, and ask for a diaphragm for a Sportster. They'll sell you one for $40, and all you need to do is drill one hole in the slider a little larger." My new diaphragm is on order and should arrive this week. Thanks, Fred, for saving me some money and teaching me something at the same time!
