My KLR has backfired twice when letting off the throttle. I don't mean two times, I mean that it backfired at two different periods, both times it was a sign of an eminent battery failure. My battery was going bad. It also backfied at start-up when the battery is going bad. You getting that too? Backfire at start up? Eddie [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

By "backfire" do you mean popping from the exhaust, or an actual backfire through the carburetor into the airbox? -Jeff Khoury From: "eddie mauri" To: "DSN KLR650" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 30, 2011 10:07:34 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Backfire....... Popping from the exhaust usually takes a couple of forms: 1. An Exhaust leak. This allows oxygen into the exhaust system where it can combine with or still burning fuel exiting the exhaust valve(s), and a spark causes a small detonation inside the muffler. 2. On a closed throttle while engine braking (especially with a "cold" engine), a high concentration of unburnt fuel can build up in the muffler. This is because without sufficient heat, the fuel does not atomize properly and exhaust very high in raw fuel is deposited into the muffler. A small spark is all that is required to set this off and this is when you usually get the Big Bang! type "backfires". Now, I guess a weak spark could cause more raw fuel to be passed through unburnt... but as I understand it, the KLR has a separate stator for providing spark than the one that operates the charging system (I may be wrong here, that's just the impression I got from reading some article somewhere). If this is so, I don't see how a weak battery could cause that unless it was just a co-incidental event. Popping noise from the exhaust, sometimes it sounds like a gun shot. But, whenever I replaced the battery, it stopped, and I had the battery checked and both times the battery was bad. If the battery is weak the engine cranks slower than it should. If the RPM's cranking is lower than the KAKR threshold an exhaust valve will be slightly open and since slow cranking is hard to start the exhaust will fill with raw fuel then ignite from the spark producing very loud explosive "backfires".
