Did you see Maimon wig out after they stopped the Mitsubishi? Stand in the course in front of a speeding buggy and not move? What a psycho! He was PISSED!!! and rightly so. I mean what a cheating bastard Schlesser is. In my neighborhood, we call his type nasty names. I expel gas in his general direction! CA Stu

Yeah Maimon was a little on the brink at that point. Not only did he jump in front of the buggy but tried to stay in front as they swerved to avoid him....Glad I got it all on tape. dat brooklyn bum

As do I! There is something about watching the giants bounce around in slo-mo that I can't resist.

For what? Starting the stage ahead of the Mitsu driver and taking a penalty? I agree what he did was unsportsman-like, but all he did was exploit a loophole in the rules. The FIA shouldn't of penalized Schlesser the hour, but changed their rules for next time! Realize that Schlesser was penalized a total of two or three (correct me if I'm wrong) hours over the coarse of the rally but only lost the Dakar by minutes. He was his own worst enemy. There is not a race team in the world that doesn't scutinize the rules and make the most of them. F1 has opened the field up to traction control since they couldn't prove teams were using it illegally. I remember watching a Richard Petty interview a few years back and a comment he said will stick with me forever. He said - "The REAL racing starts once the rulebook shows up". Everybody is looking for an edge. FWIW Karl

I have never seen anyone as angry as Maimon! If there is anything to national temperament, Masuoka and Maimon showed it. Masuoka was tight lipped, holding it all in, and Maimon had enough passion for both of them. Personally, I think the ultimate penalty for the Schlesser would be for Klienschmidt to look him in the eye and say "Nanny, nanny, boo, boo! Your ex driver beat you with only a semi-factory ride!" Watched day 2 of the coverage. Told my internet sleuthing wife not to tell me the outcome. Now here's a question to all you A-merican boys. How about a Harley engineered off roader and a light weight Hummer diesel..sans Arnold glitz ? I think the Dakar would benefit from a serious US based entry. Maybe all the discussion about old guys and bike deaths relates. If the USA was orientated to real world biking, rather than poser choppers, there might be some serious competition. I don't really care about "national" representation, as we are all one world, but US engineering seems absent from the world stage. I think Harley has the knowledge and bucks to develop serious bikes. I know their race bike venture didn't go so well, but maybe that was mind set. How about a Ram 6cyl.Cummins lightweight 4X4 ? I really enjoy seeing a contest with the whole world involved. Let's see some US iron. After all, you guys DO have some recent experience off roading in exotic deserts (?). Steve Bye the way..I did read we had one Canadian entered with a KTM.

Fantastic photos well worth the click!  Interesting as these seem to be some of the best photos I have seen so far and wonder how the Boston Globe was the one to get them. They may be posted in other places but again you gotta look at these!
