advice re starter?

Post by kevbennett@sbcglobal.net » Mon Nov 22, 2010 7:19 am

Hi, Everyone, I replaced the starter solonoid on my '95 KLR a few months ago. The bike's been starting up just great since then. Last night, though, as I was leaving a friend's house, all I got when I pressed the start button was a click. I could feel the vibrations of the plunger moving up and down inside the solonoid. I kept pressing the start button (with intervals of getting off the bike and staring intently at the engine, as if I could persuade it to start with the power of my gaze.) On the 70th try, the starter engaged and the engine roared to life. This morning, the bike started up with its usual eagerness. Any ideas what's going on? Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom. I read your posts daily and am very appreciative of the generous way so many of you share your knowledge and experience. Kevin

tighten/clean all connections and check battery. The starter seems to be pretty bulletproof on KLRs. As with a car don't hold dn your starter (button) for more than 10 seconds at a time. Let it rest; don't burn it up. Though sounds like loose or corroded connection in your case. Jeffrey #3

and if that does not cure your problem completely, spray "electrical contact cleaner" into the starter button area. revmaaatin.
