Sure it's a potential flaw...but once you fix it, it's a NON-ISSUE! Replace the doohickey and enjoy your KLR...without worry, other than routine maintenance. Lots of people own them, work on them, and have ridden them long and hard. There are still plenty of first and second year bikes around, going by what I see on Ebay and CycleTrader. In other words, any mechanical issues with this bike are well known and documented. Now, if I want to buy a dependable bike, that's EXACTLY what I want: A widely owned bike with a very long production run and a short, but very well documented list of possible issues AND fixes. If the fact that many people know the mechanical issues with this bike and like to tell you what they are and what the fixes are, complete with sources, procedures, and group fix-it parties, and that actually BOTHERS you, ley alone bothers you enough to where you want to sell your bike, by all means, sell it to someone else who has the perspective to know that that is a GOOD thing, and who will appreciate what a tremendous value the KLR really is. By the way, what IS the equivalent Honda product to the KLR? I've got XR650L mirrors on my KLR, and that is the sum total parts I would be willing to swap. Just my opinion.

OK, I really like my KLR. I have only had it since January this year, but I now have over 4,800 miles on it. I have not even had to tighten the chain on it. The dealer may have tightened it during the 500 mile check up, but that was 4,300 miles ago. It hasn't shown any sign of oil consumption, it gets between 54 and 61 miles to the gallon. It is comfortable, fun, and I think it is a good looking machine. As far as the doohickey goes, I am going to change it this Winter. It is one minor part that "MAY" cause a problem. For all the pleasure this bike is giving me, it would be foolish not to upgrade this one little part, to make sure that it is as stout and reliable as the rest of the bike. I plan to maintain it well, and ride for tens of thousands miles. I have the greatest confidence that it will not let me down. Has anyone heard anything on the torsional spring and doohicky upgrade. I would like to do this as soon as posible.

I'm doing the doohicky I thought about waiting for the torsional spring. But wanted to get it done for peace of mind. I'm glad i didn't wait 3890 miles on the klr and a broken doohicky. If your waiting to do this job DON'T.

I'm just getting back on this list , so please excuse me for not knowing what a torsional ( or do you mean a tentional ) spring is. Some insight on this spring would be appreciated. No, we do mean torsional spring. Poke around at howstuffworks.com. A tension spring is like what someone would commonly see on a screen door. It is stretched to generate preload. A torsional spring is like what is in a clock... it is "wound up" or twisted to generate preload. I know this is old subject but now getting close to 6000 miles I had to know!I took bike to local dealer and let them look inside ,I have had doo kit from Fred for over a year and could stand it no longer.Yep the spring was broken and I had all the parts and will feel better when I get bike back.I call the number on my warranty card and the KAWA rep told me I was only the 3rd YES THIRD person he has talked to who had this problem and the only thing the factory would pay for was tighting the muffler bolts !I am glad the mechanic is taking his time and doing it by the book and my print out from MARK .They are super lyars at the kawa warranty office I have been reading about this problem ever since I have had the bike eddie self

Just came back from San Diago and had Mike help me install my Doohicky. Fantastic guy to deal with. I've got an 09 with 2,000 miles and the factory doohicky was loose on the shaft and the spring had no tension at all. Would highly recommend doing the mod if you want your KLR to last. Also the Thermo-Bob is great. Befor the install my bike barely ran a needle width above cold and now it runs a constant warm temperature. I've road it in the 40's and the 80's and temp stays the same. Good luck to all. Brad 09 KLR
