Talk about having storage on a bike! Room for kitchen sink, water bed, big screen TV, etc http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/84uag1/www.horizonsunlimited.com/johnson/hilites//r:f

What's the advantage of this bike versus a jeep?  Seriously. I have to admit that he must be one hell of a rider to pilot that mess PLUS A PASSENGER through the terrain I saw in some of those pictures.  I also must believe that he dropped it more than once.  Could they both lift it? I say again, what's the advantage of this bike versus a jeep? Robert P. Wichert P.Eng +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ========================================================

Attachments : There are  advantages to 4wd, roof and more cargo room. But, a jeep has (at least) twice as many cylinders, wheels, brake parts to wear or fail and many times the weight to deal with. A couple might push a bike out of a stuck situation and be on their way more quickly than say, setting up a winch, anchor point, etc... Grant and Susan traveled for 11 years as they did on their BMW and have the story of a lifetime to show for it. Saying, " I took a Jeep across Africa" lacks the romance and adventure. =)   I highly recommend Robert Fulton, Jr.'s book One Man Caravan.  His logic was this: For an round the world trip, walking or even bicycling at the time would've been too slow. A car too expensive & heavy. So, at a dinner party he declared he would travel 'round the world by motorcycle. First problem? He didn't even own one. A representative from the Douglas company then stepped up and offered a custom prepared cycle for the journey. It had metal containers fore and aft - much like Mr' & Mrs. Johnson's BMW (albeit much smaller). Upon his death a few years ago, Mr. Fulton still owned that same machine he rode nearly 80 years ago. In 1997, I had a chance to talk by phone with Mr. Fulton about the trip he'd taken from mid 1932 to late 1933. The man was as colorful and sharp as ever.   eddie

Besides the argument that it is more *fun* to ride a bike than a jeep -- OK that's subjective ;), for one, it is generally substantially cheaper and easier to transport a bike over oceans than a car/truck/jeep -- and there a more options available. For example, in the case of North and South America, I am pretty sure you have to put a car/truck/jeep into a container and specially ship it, say from Panama to Colombia. And wait. And find people to share the container with. I met a couple who drove a minivan(!!!) from Alberta, Canada to Bolivia and beyond, and the van was much more of a hassle to ship. For a bike, you can throw it on a yacht to travel from continent to continent (Americas), or a series of small boats and go island hopping (I have friends who have done both) -- relatively dangerous though. I threw my KLR on a pallet in Panama City and it arrived in Bogota, Colombia with me following it several hours behind. Not as cheap to fly a bike as it once was (aka "dangerous goods") but it was clean and easy. Would you rather wait around for a car to arrive via ocean in an ocean liner? Perhaps weeks, while doing trans-Atlantic crossings -- Or just pick up your bike from the airport within hours or days of your arrival? At night, you can also drag the bike fairly close to your room, or sometimes in your room or just outside of a window if you are not camping. This is impossible with most accommodations which are not "nice hotels" with parking. The couple I met was constantly worrying about break-ins as the van was not nearly as secured as my bike. Ya. The Johnston's (founders of Horizon's Unlimited) bike looks pretty big and bulky no doubt. HU have put out a series of DVDs on long distance motorcycle travel and this bike shows up in it many times. All things said and done, that bike is quite well thought out. Cheers, Adam

Grant and Susan spend months at a time living on that bike. If you buy any of the videos at Horizons Unlimited you will see it in action
