battery charging?
Attachments :The charger I have is a SG2500A and no longer available from Schumacher. I think it was discontinuedso it does not compete with the Schumacher made Odyssey brand charger that is pretty muchidentical except that the SG2500A has switches to accommodate different types of batteries and the Odysseybrand one based on it removed those switches so it is specifically for the Odyssey. As you can see by the table at least a 50A charger can be used on the KLR Odyssey (PC545) battery. Table 5: Battery size and minimum three-step chargercurrentCharger Recommended ODYSSEY modelrating, amps6A PC310 / PC535 / PC545 / PC625 / PC68010A PC925 or smaller battery15A PC1200 or smaller battery25A PC1500 or smaller battery25A PC1700 or smaller battery40A PC2150 or smaller battery50A PC2250 or smaller batterySmall, portable automotive and powersport chargersmay also be used to charge your ODYSSEY battery. These chargers are generally designed to bring adischarged battery to a state of charge (SOC) that is highenough to crank an engine. Once the engine issuccessfully cranked its alternator should fully charge thebattery. It is important to keep in mind the designlimitations of these small chargers when using them.Another class of chargers is designed specifically tomaintain a battery in a high SOC. These chargers, normally in the 3/4 amp to 11/2 amp range, are not bigenough to charge a deeply discharged ODYSSEY battery. They must only be used either to continuouslycompensate for parasitic losses or to maintain a tricklecharge on a stored battery, as long as the correctvoltages are applied. It is very important, therefore, toensure that the ODYSSEY battery is fully charged beforethis type of charger is connected to it. well i tried the download it didn't work so i went to the Schumacher site it has wheels on it,how big is that thing, and you use that for charging your bike battery?
I wait with bated breath for your reply and what would the price of something like that be.

The Odyssey battery is a different creature than any other battery. It is only similar to an AGM in the fact that it does not require fluid maintenance. The Odyssey battery is not only made for starting it is also a deep cycle battery and can be deep discharged up to about 1,000 times. A regular or AGM battery will be toast if you do that a few times or less. It is true that the KLR sized Odyssey should be charged with at least 6 amp charger. The Odyssey battery actually likes high amp charging. The more the better - they claim no limit. I have a Schumacher 25-12-6A smart charger which was recommended by Odyssey until they marketed their own line of chargers which is made by Schumacher and very similar to the one I have. Anyway when I put my current Odyssey in service I gave it an initial charge at 25 amps and have not needed to charge it since (about three years). My first Odyssey failed after a few years of constant deep cycle discharges and charging with a 1 amp charger. Now I know better. If you do a search you will find the charging info either on the Odyssey site or the site of the parent company Enersys. You will have to dig around but it is there. Bottom line the rep is correct. Unless something is very different with the Odyssey battery, I would say she was wrong. I just bought a sealed agm battery and it said right on the battery to charge with a 1.2amp charger for 5 to 10 hours and to make sure it didn't get too hot. With a completly sealed battery you really don't want to get them hot when charging.

I have always heard, on bike battery never use more then 1.5 -2 amps when charging.
On my shadow (vt1100c3) I charged with 10amp. (before I knew)
The odyssey battery rep., said To use at least 6 amp and 10 would be better.
they are dry cell is that why? or was she WRONG??
